Ezekiel 17:9
Say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof.
The verse concerns Zedekiah, who had been made subject to the king of Babylon and had entered into a solemn covenant before God to render allegiance to him, but then broke that covenant. Its warning that the planting shall not prosper but shall be pulled up by the roots and wither means that his rebellion would fail and be utterly uprooted. The diadem would be removed and the crown taken off, bringing to an end the earthly kingdom of God as a theocracy. The kingdom was made subject to Babylon and then overturned three times, first when Babylon fell to Medo-Persia, then when Medo-Persia fell to Greece, and then when Greece gave way to Rome. It would be no more until the coming of Him whose right it is, Jesus, to whom God will give the throne of His father David to reign forever. That restoration of the throne takes place at the end of this world and the beginning of the world to come.
