Ezekiel 18:19
Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
The son does not bear the iniquity of the father, for each person is accountable for his own conduct. God is the owner of every soul alike, both the soul of the father and the soul of the son. Children who have reached the years of accountability are responsible for their own actions and must cooperate with God in working out their own salvation. When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all of God's statutes and has done them, he shall surely live.
The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. If the wicked will turn from all his wickedness and keep all God's statutes and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live and shall not die. All his transgressions shall not be mentioned unto him, but in his righteousness that he has done he shall live, for God has no pleasure at all that the wicked should die, but that he should turn from his ways and live.
This means a converted child of unbelieving parents must obey God when a parent's command conflicts with God's command, going forward humbly and yet firmly, trusting the heavenly Father to open a way to do righteousness without practicing iniquity. The chapter is instruction to receive reproof and warning with a patient and teachable spirit, so that the hearer may receive God's blessing. It is also support for warning people about sin, for God sees unjust conduct and judges it.
