Ezekiel 18:9
Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD. Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
The one who has walked in God's statutes, and has kept His judgments, to deal truly, is just, and he shall surely live. This obedience to God's law and truthful dealing are the marks of the just person, set in contrast with sin and transgression. To be just is to do what is lawful and right according to the law of the Lord, shown in practice by not oppressing anyone, not spoiling by violence, restoring the pledge and what was wrongfully withheld, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, refusing usury and increase, withdrawing the hand from iniquity, and executing true judgment between people.
The promise belongs to the rejection of inherited guilt: God owns every soul, each person is judged by his own conduct, and the son does not bear the iniquity of the father. Children who have reached years of accountability are responsible for their own actions and must cooperate with God in working out their own salvation. When parents command what breaks God's commandments, children must obey God as heavenly Father, Owner, Creator, and Redeemer, while still respecting parents in everything that can be done conscientiously.
These practical qualifications describe those who are fit to take part in God's work. The chapter's warnings and reproofs about turning from sin to just conduct should be heard and heeded with patience and a teachable spirit so the Lord's blessing may be received. God sees every unjust act and decision, those who persist in oppression and wrongdoing cannot be justified and will be judged, and warnings must be given to those who go against the light they have received.
