Ezekiel 19:10
Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters. Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood, planted by the waters: she was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters.
The mother in the figure is Jerusalem or Israel herself, likened to a vine of her own kind set in a favored place beside plentiful waters. That planting by abundant waters accounts for her early vigor and fruitfulness, when she was full of strong and thriving branches. Those branches grew firm and tall until they were like rods suited to become royal scepters.
In that flourishing state Israel stood exalted among the nations, honored and sought after as in the days of Solomon when kings came to hear his wisdom. Against that former strength and beauty is set her later loss of glory, when the Lord plucked up the vine, cast it down to the ground, and left it to be consumed. The whole chapter is therefore a lament over the sorrows of Jerusalem, sorrows brought upon her by sin.
