And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein;
A hand was sent to Ezekiel holding a roll of a book as God commissioned him to speak to rebellious Israel. When the roll was spread out before him it was seen to be written with lamentation and mourning and woe. The roll was the written message God supplied, which Ezekiel was commanded to receive into himself and then to deliver faithfully to the people whether they would listen or refuse.
The vision of the hand holding the scroll belongs with judgment and is to be studied together with the judgment scene of Ezekiel 9. In that connection the scroll signifies a divine message associated with judgment.
