Ezekiel 20:39
As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols. As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.
The verse is an ironic rebuke to professed Israel: if they will not listen to God, they may go on serving every one his idols. They are commanded to pollute His holy name no more with their gifts and with their idols, for to bring Him offerings while persisting in idolatry affronts His name. The idolatry so condemned is not only the worship of images, but the exalting of self and the following of one's own ways.
The idols thus served include selfish indulgences that divert means from missionary work, and such a course neglects the work God has given and weakens spiritual life. In its wider setting in Ezekiel 20:38-44, the verse warns that God's people have failed to appreciate His mercy and to heed His warnings. God holds His people accountable when they disregard His warnings and dishonor His name, for He will not be trifled with. He therefore bids them follow their idols and bear in punishment the consequences of their perversity.
