Ezekiel 21:10

It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree.

Ezekiel 21 belongs to the prophetic explanation that Israel went into exile because of its transgressions. Those transgressions were above all idolatry and the desecration of the Sabbath, which brought apostasy to its fullness. The sharpened and glittering sword in the verse is set within that reckoning with disobedience.

It marks the destruction of the kingdom of Judah and a change in human dominion. After Judah, ruling power was to be overturned three more times in succession. The first overturning was to be by Medo-Persia, the second by Grecia, and the third by Rome. Then Christ would come, and the kingdom would be His.
