Ezekiel 21:18

The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,

The verse marks the beginning of another message from the Lord to Ezekiel. It belongs to the prophetic warnings given to the exiles in Babylon before the destruction of Jerusalem. Its setting in Ezekiel 20–22 recounts how idolatry and Sabbath desecration led to Israel’s dispersion.

The verses that follow describe Israel as already overturned by Babylonian power under King Nebuchadnezzar. That overturning sets the context for the later prophecy of further overturnings. It introduces a prophecy of the destruction of the kingdom of Judah and a change in human dominion, with three more overturnings of dominion to take place by Medo-Persia, by Grecia, and by Rome, after which Christ would come and the kingdom would be His.
