Ezekiel 21:29

Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.

The empty visions and lying divinations were the work of false prophets assuring Israel that Nebuchadnezzar would not advance against Jerusalem. In reality he was to take Tyre and from Tyre move on to conquer Jerusalem. This warning stands within Ezekiel's twenty-two-year appeal calling Israel back to God. That appeal holds up the surrounding kingdoms to demonstrate how God humbles pride and will humble what pride remains.

The verse belongs to the record of the steps that brought the dispersion, where idolatry and Sabbath desecration plunged the people into distress and exile. It is linked with the time when Israel would continue without a king through the days of that dispersion.

The chapter announces the breaking up of Judah's kingdom and a transfer of human dominion. Dominion was to be overturned in succession by Medo-Persia, then Greece, then Rome. After those overturnings Christ was to come, and the kingdom was to become His.
