Ezekiel 23:32
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister’s cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much. Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister’s cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much.
In Ezekiel 23 a corrupt woman stands for a corrupt church. Israel and Judah are portrayed as adulterous women, with Samaria and Jerusalem longing for alliances with Assyria and Babylon. Spiritual fornication in the passage means apostasy by turning from God's law and testimony and worship to an unlawful connection with idolatrous or false religious groups. Israel's forsaking of God to seek help in Egypt was rebellion against Him, and the verse is His blunt rebuke of that spiritual fornication. This unfaithfulness shows how God's people abandon Him when they turn from His commands and attach themselves to the world. Babylon's cup, deep and large, represents the corrupting influence of that apostasy.
The chapter prophesies the king of Babylon coming against Jerusalem and the removal of the diadem from Israel's profane, wicked prince, with the kingdom overturned until the one entitled to it comes. This prophecy is dated to 593 BC and shows that the scattering of Israel began with Babylon's destruction of Jerusalem. The passage does not refer to a church's use of civil laws to manage temporal affairs. Professed Christian churches today that seek union with the civil power are guilty of the same spiritual fornication and rebellion, for God has furnished a plenitude of blessings in Jesus Christ and demands the whole allegiance of His church, and He will not divide His glory with another.
