Ezekiel 23:35

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.

The lewd and corrupt woman in the chapter figures a corrupt church, presenting the awful sins of Israel and Judah under the names of Samaria and Jerusalem. Forgetting God and casting Him behind the back is spiritual fornication and unfaithfulness, turning away from Him. That whoredom means departure from God's law and worship for false religious associations.

For Israel this meant forsaking God and seeking help in Egypt, which was rebellion. Like a wife leaving her husband, Israel and Judah followed Babylon and other worldly powers in idolatry and alliances with other nations, casting off God's precepts and thereby casting off God. Those who do so must bear the guilt and consequences of their lewdness, whoredoms, apostasy, idolatry, and idolatrous relations and alliances.

As judgment on that wickedness the king of Babylon would come against Jerusalem, and the kingdom would be overturned with the crown removed from the profane and wicked prince until the rightful ruler came. The verse is searching moral instruction about those sins and is a prediction of the last days. God has furnished fullness of blessing in Jesus Christ, demands all from His church, and will not divide His glory with another.

The same guilt belongs to professed Christian churches today that seek union with the civil power. The whoredom described does not include a church's lawful use of civil government for temporal affairs. Because of its figure and language the passage is best read in private, although some passages around it are properly read anywhere.
