Ezekiel 23:41

And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oil.

Ezekiel 23:41 belongs to a portrayal of the grave sins of Judah and Israel under the figure of lewd women. Samaria and Jerusalem are set forth as adulterous women who turned from God and attached themselves to foreign powers, especially the Babylonians. Their adultery represents God's covenant people abandoning loyalty to Him and joining themselves to the world and its ways.

The corrupt woman shown in the chapter means a corrupt church. The stately bed and the prepared table with incense and oil are part of the figurative language of that spiritual fornication. This fornication signifies apostasy, turning from God's law and testimony and worship to an unlawful religious connection with idolatrous or false religious groups.

That turning included forsaking God to seek help in Egypt, which was rebellion. The verse is connected with the Babylonian attack on Jerusalem and the judgment that removed Israel's wicked prince and overturned the kingdom. The scattering of Israel was God's punishment for forsaking His law and disobeying His commandments.

The same guilt belongs to professed Christian churches today that seek union with the civil power. God has furnished fullness of blessing in Jesus Christ and demands all from His church. He will not divide His glory with another.
