Ezekiel 29:7

When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break, and rend all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loins to be at a stand.

Egypt failed the people who reached for it for support. When those in need took hold of it by the hand, it broke apart and tore the shoulder of those grasping it. When they leaned their weight upon it, it gave way and collapsed under them. That collapse left them unsteady and without support, so that trusting in it brought injury rather than aid.

Human help can prove as unreliable as a fractured reed that pierces and fails the hand that leans on it.
