Ezekiel 31:12

And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him.

The verse foretells the fall of Assyria as the direct consequence of its pride and cruelty. God delivers the proud kingdom into the hand of a mighty foreign nation, which cuts it down and scatters its power. Its fallen branches lying upon the mountains and in all the valleys, and its boughs broken by all the rivers of the land, picture the complete collapse of its rule spread across the country. The peoples of the earth who had lived under its protection and shadow abandon it and go down away from it, leaving it desolate. Its ruin stands as a warning to other nations not to exalt themselves in pride lest they share the same overthrow.
