Ezekiel 31:7

Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters.

Assyria is shown at the height of its prosperity as fair and great, made impressive by the length of its branches and sustained because its root stood by great waters. Its glory is likened to a noble cedar in Lebanon in the garden of God, towering above the trees around it and surpassing them in beauty. That cedar figure represents the glory of the Assyrian realm.

Its greatness and beauty came from unusual blessings, seen in its extensive growth beside abundant waters. Its pride and cruelty would bring its fall. Its rise and fall remains a lesson for the nations of the earth today, that such blessings are to be used for the benefit of mankind and not turned into merciless oppression that forgets God and fellow men.
