Ezekiel 32:12
By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed. By the swords of the mighty will I cause thy multitude to fall, the terrible of the nations, all of them: and they shall spoil the pomp of Egypt, and all the multitude thereof shall be destroyed.
Ezekiel 32:12 belongs to the prophecies against Egypt, declaring the certain fate and destruction to come upon Pharaoh and his host or army. It foretells that by the swords of the mighty, the terrible of the nations, the multitude of Egypt will fall, its pomp and pride and splendor will be spoiled and brought to ruin, its multitude destroyed, and its land and people brought to desolation, ending its supremacy among the nations. The terrible of the nations are Nebuchadrezzar's forces, whose invasion would conquer Egypt and bring it into subjection to foreign rulers.
The judgment was pronounced because of Egypt's sin and oppression of God's people, with the purpose that Egypt should know the Lord. The prophecy was literally fulfilled when Egypt fell from a leading empire to one of the basest of the kingdoms, losing its greatness and rule. The chapter containing the verse places hades in the depths of the earth in contrast to the land of the living, showing that hades is the land of the dead.
