Ezekiel 33:10

Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?

God commands the son of man to speak to the house of Israel, who answer the watchman's warning with despair that their transgressions and sins are upon them and they are wasting away in them, asking how they can then live.
God answers that despairing question with an oath that He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but calls the wicked to turn from his evil way and live.
Sin brings death, while the wicked who turns from sin and does what is right shall live, for repentance and a changed course open the way to life.
Christ gave His life to save sinners weighed down by sin and make return to loyalty possible, so genuine humility and confession are accepted by God, who gives the repentant another trial.
Appointed spiritual watchmen are charged to guard the spiritual life and prosperity of God's people by faithfully speaking warning and reproof, and the blood of souls who perish through unfaithfulness will be upon unfaithful ministers.

Despair and Watchman Warning

The verse records the house of Israel answering the watchman's warning with despair, confessing that their transgressions and sins rest upon them and that they are pining away and wasting away in them, and asking how they should then live. It is the cry of guilty sinners who feel weighed down and overwhelmed by sin and see no way to life or hope of living on. Their fear is that their transgressions remain upon them with no way to be freed from them.

The verse is God's command to the son of man to speak to the house of Israel, bringing the Lord's warning to the people in that condition. It belongs to the charge to warn the wicked and call them to turn from their evil ways. That warning is to be heard and received and attended to, for their despairing question is the need the call to repentance must answer and it stands within the way to life.

The chapter outlines the work God approves, especially the responsibilities of those appointed as spiritual watchmen. They must guard against dangers to the spiritual life, health, and prosperity of God's people. They must watch for souls and be accountable for giving warning, faithfully speaking warning and reproof against what dishonors God.

The warning was truth offered in love, with reproof and warning to people whose souls were in peril. When given and despised or rejected, it was made ineffectual.

Those who take Satan's side, justify sin, and hinder obedience must bear the penalty of sin. The blood of souls who perish through unfaithfulness will be upon the heads of unfaithful ministers, whose condemnation will match their influence in leading others into transgression.

Call to Repent and Live

God answers the despairing cry of those weighed down by transgression and pining away in sin with a solemn oath that He has no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but calls the wicked to turn from his evil way and live, asking why they will die. The question of how such sinners should then live belongs to a warning that sin brings death, while repentance and a changed course open the way to life. The wicked can live by turning from sin and doing what is right, while past righteousness does not protect one who turns to wrongdoing.

Christ gave His life to save just such sinners feeling their sins upon them, to give them another trial and to make it possible for them to return to loyalty. Genuine humility and confession are accepted by God, who gives the repentant another trial and test.

God's government holds each person personally responsible, for no one can obey for a neighbor and another's neglect does not excuse one's own duty. Those who permit themselves to be deceived are not excused for neglecting to search the Word for themselves and committing their souls to a minister, for the minister cannot pay the ransom for their souls. Every man must give strict account for his influence. Churches are told to examine their conduct, correct wrongs, repent, and be converted. The verse is to be read personally with the Holy Spirit applying it to the individual case, calling for the Holy Spirit to come into the heart and abide there, for Satan to be expelled from the soul temple, and for the door of the heart to be opened to Jesus in repentance to enjoy the richest blessing.
