Ezekiel 33:23

Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

The coming of the word of the Lord introduces divine instruction to be read and studied, and the instruction in chapters 33 and 34 is God's truth and not a pleasing fable. It calls for making straight paths for the feet so that the lame are not turned out of the way. Its meaning must be grasped with the utmost stretch of understanding because it applies to those living in the last days.

The chapter outlines the work God approves, and its teaching on watchmen means those entrusted with sacred responsibility must stay alert to dangers threatening the spiritual life, health, and prosperity of God's people. God's government rests on personal responsibility, with each person answering for himself. No one can obey in another's place, and neglecting duty is not excused because others do the same.

The word comes as a watchman warning laying strict responsibility on both preachers and hearers, requiring those who preach to prayerfully search the Scriptures, teach a plain Thus saith the Lord, and help the church obey the word. Those who neglect prayerful searching, entertain error, and preach false doctrine contrary to the plain word bring ruin on themselves, with condemnation proportionate to the influence their words and example had in leading men and women into transgression. Many ministers directly hinder obedience by warning the people against doing what God commanded, thereby doing the work the enemy did in the heavenly court and still does on earth by hindering others from receiving the word, and the blood of souls perishing through their unfaithfulness will be upon their heads, for every person will give a strict account for how influence was exerted. Those who let themselves be deceived are not excused for committing their souls to an unfaithful minister and neglecting to search the word of God for themselves, and the minister cannot pay ransom for their souls; Christ gave His life to save them, to give another trial and make return to loyalty possible, but those who take Satan's side to justify sin must bear the penalty of sin.
