The Watchman on the Wall at NightBible World

Ezekiel 33:4

Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.

The people choose a watchman, and when he sees the sword coming upon the land he blows the trumpet to warn them, so that whoever hears it and ignores it bears the guilt for his own death when the sword takes him, while he who heeds it saves his life and the watchman who warned faithfully is clear. The warning makes each hearer personally accountable before God, and each must hear and understand for himself with no excuse in another person's neglect of duty. The watchman is under solemn obligation to stay alert at his post and sound the alarm when he sees danger, for if he fails to warn the people God will require their blood at his hands. The trumpet must give a certain, clear sound of warning against sin, temptation and unbelief, since a hesitant or conflicting sound leaves people confused and unprepared. This is truth to be studied and proclaimed by faithful messengers in the last days, urgently warning that the day of the Lord is near and calling people to turn from sin and prepare for Christ's second coming while there is still time.

Setting and Symbols

The people set a watchman over themselves, and when he sees the sword coming upon the land he blows the trumpet to warn the people. Whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and takes not warning bears the guilt of his own death when the sword comes and takes him away, his blood being upon his own head because he heard and did not heed, while he that takes warning delivers his soul.

The trumpet is the watchman's warning of approaching danger, and the coming sword means the people are in peril. That peril is judgment coming upon the hearer who refuses to heed, and the danger of sin and death of which ministers must faithfully give notice so people are not left unwarned. When watchmen recognize the sword coming and the danger facing God's people, especially when united, they sound that warning more clearly and loudly, plainly and forcefully.

The trumpet must give a certain, clear sound in order to give a clear alarm. A hesitant or uncertain trumpet gives no clear alarm and leaves people unprepared to realize their danger and do the work required, with the watchman then accountable for those left to perish. When watchmen give conflicting sounds over truths such as the image of the beast, the hearer is left in confusion of mind that discourages faith and sickens body and soul. The trumpet means clear, certain warning against temptation and unbelief, to be sounded earnestly for both believers and unbelievers so that all who will listen have opportunity to hear and understand the truth.

Hearer's Personal Responsibility

Whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and takes not warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head, for the hearer who ignores the warning bears responsibility for his own death and destruction when danger comes. He who takes warning delivers his soul, while he who hears but refuses to heed bears the loss himself. This instruction is truth to be studied and understood for those living in the last days. The watchman's warning makes each hearer accountable, and responsibility rests on each one personally. Each must hear and understand for himself, and no one is excused by another person's neglect of duty.

Those who permit themselves to be deceived are not excused for neglecting to search the Word of God for themselves and committing their souls to a minister who does not diligently search to know the truth. The minister cannot pay the ransom for their souls. Allowing opposing shepherds to turn one against the messenger and message, and refusing to examine the Word for oneself, leaves guilt on the hearer when destruction comes upon him. Christ gave His life to save sinners, to give them another trial and make it possible to return to loyalty. But those who take Satan's side to justify sin must bear the penalty of sin themselves. God's servants sound the trumpet through their message, and rejecting that message is like rejecting Christ.

The warning is personal, to be applied by the Holy Spirit to the individual case. It calls the hearer to let the Holy Spirit come in and abide, to have Satan expelled from the soul temple, and to open the door of the heart to Jesus to receive richest blessing. After kindly and faithfully warning someone doing wrong, the one who warned has delivered his own soul. If the wicked is faithfully warned to turn from his way and does not turn, he dies in his iniquity and his blood is upon his own head. Those who hear are duty-bound to heed whatever God sends them. When light is presented they must not only receive it but pass it along and add their influence in its favor so its full force is felt in the church and the world.

Watchman's Solemn Duty

The watchman who sees danger coming must blow the trumpet and sound the alarm, and if he warns the people and they refuse to listen, their blood is upon their own souls and the watchman is clear and has delivered his own soul. If he fails to blow the trumpet and leaves the people unwarned so they perish, he is held accountable and God will require their blood at his hands. The warning must be faithfully sounded so people are not left without notice of the danger of sin and death, for ministers are watchmen upon the walls of Zion upon whose fidelity depends the salvation of souls. That watchman responsibility applies to responsible leaders who must act faithfully to prevent evil from taking hold in the church and home, since neglecting that duty leaves people exposed to danger.

Those entrusted as watchmen must stay alert to dangers threatening the spiritual life, health, and prosperity of God's people, and raise their voices to warn against what dishonors God. They must keep guard resolutely and determinedly and never sleep at their post of duty, never standing by passively while souls are exposed to temptation and unbelief. Their duty is to stay alert and protest wrongdoing, for those appointed as watchmen who fail to do so fail in their duty. They must see dangers coming and distinguish truth from error and righteousness from unrighteousness. This guarding care applies where youth who are trying to obey God are brought into close connection with those who know not the truth, requiring pastors, teachers, managers, and men and women of mature Christian experience to guard and help them.

When watchmen recognize the sword coming and the danger facing God's people, they must sound the warning more clearly and loudly, clearly and forcefully warning of coming danger. Zion's watchmen when united in Christ, with spiritual eyesight to discern spiritual things and see as God sees, will see the sword coming and sound the trumpet in clearer, louder notes. A called watchman must sound the trumpet plainly and keep the central message in view, since side issues can hinder the truth from bringing people to conversion. By contrast, sleepy sentinels with spiritual senses benumbed see and realize no danger and give no warning in vain, and if the people perish through that silence their blood is required at the watchmen's hands.

The verse places solemn responsibility on watchmen to rightly understand and explain the word of God, living very near to God to hear His word and be impressed with His Spirit so the people do not look to them in vain. The responsibility of the watchmen of today is as much greater than in the days of the prophet as their light is clearer and their privileges and opportunities are greater. This makes it the minister's duty to warn every man, to teach every man in meekness and wisdom, to refuse conformity to the practices of the world, to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints, and to stay closely connected with God, since Satan works to break down every barrier to souls. Through unfaithfulness ambassadors of Christ lose their own souls and the souls of those who hear them. Faithful warnings expose wrongdoing and alert people to danger even when they disturb those who prefer ease and reassurance, while watchmen who see danger but fail to sound the warning are unfaithful.

Last-Day Warning Message

This instruction is truth to be studied and understood by those living in the last days. God sends faithful messengers to lift up the voice as John the Baptist did, proclaiming warning truth and opening the Bible to prepare people for Christ's second coming. Each hearer must hear and understand for himself, and if he refuses to examine the Word for himself and allows opposing shepherds to turn him against the messenger and message, and destruction comes upon him, his blood is upon his own head. The trumpet's warning is a call to prepare for Christ's coming, and sounding it requires wholehearted, unselfish work.

The warning must be sounded so that none are left unwarned. It is to urgently warn that the day of the Lord is near while there is still time. The last message gives a clear warning that gives people a chance to turn from sin and obey God, so those who reject it have no excuse and must bear their own iniquity.

In the hour of the plagues, people will reproach ministers for failing to warn them and for assuring them that all the world would be converted and that there was no danger. The ministers will suffer even greater wrath than the people because they failed to give the warning.

God prepares His people to stand in the great crisis before them by speaking through His word and His ministers and by arousing watchmen and sending them forth with warning, reproof, and instruction so the people are enlightened. The trumpet must give a certain sound, sounding the alarm so that those who hear realize their danger and do the work required at the present time. Those who hear are duty-bound to heed whatever God sends them, and when light is presented they must not only receive it but pass it along and add their influence in its favor so its full force is felt in the church and the world. In God's order the American Sentinel is one of the voices sounding that alarm, and all should read it carefully and then send it to a relative or friend, thus putting to the best use the light God has given them. The signal trumpet of the watchman must be heard and then passed along the walls of Zion so the people can prepare for the coming conflict and the great issues before them. No one is to be left to stumble in darkness in ignorance of the purposes of God and the devices of Satan and what shall come upon the earth. Hearing and giving the warning does a work of fitting a people to stand in the day of trouble, with all acting their part, clothed with the righteousness of Christ and fortified by the truth so that the delusions of Satan are not accepted as genuine manifestations of the power of God.

Sharing the Warning Today

The whole chapter is to be studied in connection with carrying out Christ's work, including medical missionary service, because the hearer who ignores the warning is responsible for his own death when danger comes. That life-or-death watchman duty rests on canvassers, who as watchmen are to sound the alarm to awaken people to danger and bring them the message of salvation through Christ and obedience to God's law. It is especially for those who might not otherwise hear the truth that canvassers are to bring it.

Teachers and other workers are like watchmen when their conduct influences the young, and they must faithfully warn and guide them rather than at times serving the opposing cause. Where youth who are trying to obey God are brought into close connection with those who know not the truth, pastors, teachers, managers, and men and women of mature Christian experience must guard and help them and never stand by passively while souls are exposed to temptation and unbelief. The trumpet means clear, certain warning against temptation and unbelief, sounded earnestly for both believers and unbelievers so that all who will listen have opportunity to hear and understand.

Spiritual leaders are responsible to warn about danger and correct wrongdoing, rebuking sin and upholding the standard, and if they fail they bear responsibility for their neglect. Allowing serious evils to continue in the mission instead of rebuking sin, and allowing evil to take hold in the church and home through unfaithfulness, leaves people exposed to danger. Those responsible for others must therefore remain alert and warn promptly when unbelief and skepticism threaten them, since the one who hears the warning but does not heed it bears responsibility for the resulting loss.

In God's order the American Sentinel is one of the voices sounding the alarm to enlighten the people so they realize their danger and do the work required at the present time. Those who hear are duty-bound to heed whatever God sends them, and when light is presented they must not only receive it but pass it along and add their influence in its favor so its full force is felt in the church and the world. All should therefore read it carefully and then send it to a relative or friend, thus putting to best use the light God has given them.

A called watchman must sound the trumpet plainly and keep the central message in view, for side issues can hinder the truth from bringing people to conversion. When watchmen give conflicting sounds over truths such as the image of the beast, the hearer is left in confusion of mind that discourages faith and sickens body and soul. The trumpet must give a clear alarm so people can respond, and watchmen must awaken those who are at ease and warn them, including by laboring for religious liberty.
