Ezekiel 34:24

And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken it.

Ezekiel 34:24 belongs to a chapter about unfaithful shepherds. That chapter is to be studied individually with spiritual discernment, since spiritual things must be spiritually discerned. It is linked with the call in Isaiah 58 for unfaithful shepherds to return to faithful service, to respect God's law, and to restore the paths people should follow.

The verse is part of God's covenant of peace and gives most precious encouragement. It promises that the Lord will save His flock so they are no more a prey, will be their God, and will set His servant David over them as shepherd to feed them and as prince among them. The most striking feature of this covenant is the exceeding richness of pardoning mercy to the sinner if he repents and turns from sin, with salvation through God's tender mercies, mercy to unrighteousness, and remembering sins no more. Showing such mercy does not turn away from justice or dishonor the law by letting transgression go unpunished, and under the new covenant perfect obedience is the condition of life. If the sinner repents and confesses, he finds pardon because Christ by His sacrifice has satisfied the demands of the law for every repentant believing sinner, giving power to become sons of God to all who receive Him and believe on His name as the Word made flesh full of grace and truth, of whose fullness all receive grace for grace.

The chapter conveys what the Spirit says to the churches for forming a character after the divine likeness through daily conversion and willing consecration, and for preparing with joy to meet the Lord when He comes in the clouds of heaven with power and glory instead of continuing to do as one pleases. It applies to one who has apostatized and made a wrong choice about association and influence, showing that none of his sins shall be mentioned to him if he turns and does what is lawful and right, and he shall surely live.
