Ezekiel 42:17

He measured the north side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.

Ezekiel 42:17 belongs to detailed directions for measuring and preparing the buildings of God's house. The measurement is exact and complete, with the north side measured as five hundred reeds with the measuring reed round about. Every least item was recorded according to the reed, including the little chambers and doorways and arches and pillars and the great gate facing east. These detailed instructions for measuring and preparing reveal God as a deviser and planner.

The true measure is everything, the very law of God, and the measuring reed is God's spiritual measure of a person. God puts His law into the least of human acts and dealings, even the ordinary measure of wheat, so that by learning and living it people are elevated and ennobled and sanctified in heart and affection. The whole duty of man taught here is to love God supremely and one's neighbor as oneself.

Those faithful in the least shall live and rule among the greatest and be entrusted with the divine cause. They take the power and grace brought through Jesus Christ and by the will of God build character after the divine model, preparing for the glory to be revealed. What is needed now is persons whose characters and works measure life and things by God's exact measurement, for a righteous life of honest, faithful dealing builds the whole righteous stature and structure. Such true people, elevated and ennobled through divine grace, are not appreciated by those unenlightened by God's Spirit, because people have made false standards and false values and let them stand in place of God.
