Ezekiel 42:18

He measured the south side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed.

He measured the south side at five hundred reeds with the measuring reed as one exact measurement among instructions about buildings to be prepared, belonging to the vision of a man with an appearance like brass standing in the gate with a reed in his hand measuring the whole building. The measuring took in every part of the structure, from small chambers and doorways to arches and pillars and the great gate facing east, with every smallest item recorded.

The true measure is everything and is the law of God, meaning God's spiritual standard for a person applied to the smallest acts and dealings, even common commercial measures such as the mere measure for wheat. A righteous life of honest and faithful dealing in small things builds the whole righteous character and structure, and learning and living by God's measure elevates, ennobles, and sanctifies the heart and affections.

Those faithful in the least become fitted to live and rule among the greatest and to be entrusted with the divine cause, by receiving the power and grace provided through Jesus Christ and by choosing to build character after the divine pattern in preparation for the glory to be revealed, which is loving God supremely and loving one's neighbor as oneself as the whole duty of humanity. People unenlightened by the Spirit do not appreciate such true character because they have set up false standards and false values in place of God. The measuring leads to the entrance of God's glory and to the command to show the house to Israel so they may be ashamed of their wrongs and measure themselves by the pattern, for the law of the house is that the whole area on the top of the mountain is completely holy, so what is needed now is people whose character and work measure all of life by God's exact standard.
