Ezekiel 42:19

He turned about to the west side, and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring reed.

Ezekiel 42:19 is one step in the complete measuring of the house in Ezekiel 40-43, where a man whose appearance was like brass stands in the gateway with a measuring reed in his hand. He measures and records every least item, including little chambers, doorways, arches, and pillars. The survey includes the great gate looking toward the east, and then the west side at five hundred reeds.

The reed is God's exact measurement, which is the very law of God brought into the least of human acts and dealings. It is the spiritual measure of the person.

The vision closes with the command to show the house to Israel so that they may be ashamed of their iniquities and measure the pattern. For the law of the house upon the top of the mountain is most holy.

Learning and living that measure by loving God supremely and neighbor as self, and by faithfulness in the least, elevates, ennobles, and sanctifies the heart and affections. It builds a righteous stature, structure, and character after the divine model through the power and grace brought through Jesus Christ. That work fits people to live and rule among the greatest and prepares them for the glory to be revealed when the glory of God comes in.
