Ezekiel 44:8

And ye have not kept the charge of mine holy things: but ye have set keepers of my charge in my sanctuary for yourselves.

Those entrusted with God's holy things did not keep His charge but set keepers of His sanctuary for themselves. Israel failed to guard what God had made holy and instead appointed people to oversee the sanctuary for their own purposes. Those entrusted stewards failed to guard faithfully and turned their service to themselves.

The verse condemns turning God-given responsibility and sacred service to human advantage and self-serving ends. Sacred office was made to serve human purposes rather than to keep God's charge. Privilege and responsibility were bent toward self instead of faithful guardianship.

The same failure is seen in those who have had the privilege of knowing Bible truth. They have not made that truth a part of their lives. They have not returned their entrusted abilities to God in faithful service.
