But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.
The waters are seen issuing from under the threshold of the house or sanctuary eastward at the south side of the altar, flowing toward the east country and down into the desert and into the sea, measured as to the ankles, then to the knees, then to the loins, then as a river too deep to be passed over. Whithersoever those rivers come the waters are healed and everything that lives and moves lives, with exceeding many fish, and on both banks grow all trees for food whose leaf does not fade and whose fruit is never exhausted, bringing forth new fruit every month because their waters issue out of the sanctuary, the fruit for food and the leaf for medicine with power to heal physical and spiritual infirmity. The stream beginning as a small, very small rivulet is God's work, the truth for this time, the gospel given in its purity and proclaimed in clear, unmistakable language, and its deepening and widening is beginning in a small way and growing into a large work advancing onward and still onward in all fields nigh and afar off until its life-giving waters are spread over all the earth. God's people and chosen kingdom are not stagnant water or a stagnant pool but a constantly flowing river that grows deeper and wider as it advances.
That growth to reach many souls comes not through display or any devising of man but through the working of the Holy Spirit on human hearts and agencies as Christ Himself worked, with His blessing attending His followers when His methods become their methods, including in schools not conducted after the worldly plan, and as illustrated by the work at Madison showing how the message should be carried in many places by many workers. The flow toward the east country and down into the desert and into the sea where the waters are healed is the work extending to the east and to the west and to the north, to the islands of the sea and to all parts of the world, and it is not to be centered in any one place nor to have strength and efficiency concentrated in any one place but to be managed as a great and living interest by human instrumentalities in great separate independent interests, since burden-bearing gives strength and development while freedom from responsibility leaves character undeveloped and powers repressed. The advancing stream moves onward as men are called from the plow and from common commercial vocations, educated in connection with men of experience, and proclaim the truth with power under the overruling guidance of the Holy Spirit, so that through wonderful workings of divine providence mountains of difficulty are removed and cast into the sea, the message is heard and understood, men know what is truth, the whole earth is warned and then the end comes, revealing mastery of the situation.
Christ came as the Great Physician to heal the wounds sin made in the human family, and His Spirit working through servants in whom Christ abides and who show forth His love imparts mighty healing power efficacious for body and soul, so that grace received from the Saviour flows from the whole being as a tide of spiritual life to bless humanity, healing the maladies sin produced and bringing sanctification, comfort, victory over the world, light, strength and refreshing to those who with contrition of heart walk humbly with God in the footsteps of Christ, with good fruit borne witnessing to a work of righteousness, as seen when Joseph was made a fountain of life to preserve Egypt and when Daniel saved the wise men of Babylon. That life-giving, healing flow is medical missionary work, picturing the wonderful work designed from the beginning to be accomplished through the church to glorify the divine name and bring blessing to the world, with sanitariums designed by divine power working through them to be such a river of life and healing to the world, and with homes of open hearts and godly influence becoming channels of healing and renewed life to barren places.
