Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other.
The verse belongs to the vision of waters issuing from under the threshold of the house eastward at the south side of the altar. The waters beginning as a small, very small rivulet mean the work in its beginning, which commences in a small way and grows into a large work done by many that reaches many souls. The growth of the waters means the extension of the work to the east and to the west, to the islands of the sea, and to all parts of the world, bringing healing where they go into the sea. Those who held it to the north taught the growth means extension to the east and to the north, to the islands of the sea, and to all parts of the world.
God's chosen kingdom, His people, are not a stagnant pool but a river constantly flowing and becoming deeper and wider as it advances until its life-giving waters are spread over all the earth. The deepening and widening stream of living water is an illustration of the way the truth and gospel for this time is to go, to be given in its purity in clear, unmistakable language under the overruling guidance of the Holy Spirit to prepare the way of the Lord. The increase comes not through display or any devising on the part of man but through the working of the Holy Spirit on the hearts of human agencies, which was the way the Saviour worked, and when His methods become the methods of His followers His blessing will attend their labors.
Wherever the gospel is received its grace heals the maladies that sin has produced, giving sanctification, comfort, victory over the world, light, strength, and refreshing from the Lord. Wherever the gospel is received its grace heals the maladies sin has produced, for the Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His beams bringing light, strength, and refreshing from the Lord. The very many trees on both banks of the river, and the good fruit borne on its banks, bear witness to a work of righteousness.
The work is the Lord's and is not to be centered in any one place but is to become a great and living interest managed by many human instrumentalities in many places, with each institution remaining independent working out God's plan under His direction, because burden-bearing gives strength and development while freedom from responsibility leaves character undeveloped and powers repressed and weakened. The work done at Madison illustrates the way the message should be carried in many places, going forward freely in the Lord without being daunted, including school work not conducted after the worldly plan. In all fields nigh and afar off men called from the plow and from common commercial vocations will be educated in connection with men of experience and will proclaim the truth with power so the message will be heard and understood and men will know what is truth. Through wonderful workings of divine providence mountains of difficulty will be removed and cast into the sea, revealing God as master of the situation, and onward and still onward the work will advance until the whole earth shall have been warned and then shall the end come.
