Ezekiel 5:11
Wherefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD; Surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, therefore will I also diminish thee; neither shall mine eye spare, neither will I have any pity.
The message stands within the first twenty chapters delivered through Ezekiel among the captives in Babylonia by the river Chebar. Those visions reveal God's overruling providence over the nations. The charge is that Israel defiled God's sanctuary with detestable things and abominations. That defilement was idolatry, a moral pollution, proving that human sin can defile a sanctuary.
For that defilement divine judgment came upon the people. The judgment handed Israel over into the hands of her enemies. It diminishes the people and withdraws all pity, mercy, and sparing. The same warning reaches tobacco use that fouls church pews and makes worship and kneeling there difficult, for such conduct profanes the house of God and must be abandoned.
