Ezekiel 7:22
My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it. My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it.
The secret place is God's holy temple in the first sense, and in the wider sense any place or thing where God should dwell and that should be set apart to him alone. Ezekiel chapters 1-10 unfold the sanctuary and true tabernacle in heaven which the Lord pitched and not man, of which the sanctuary of Moses with cherubim overshadowing the mercy-seat was the shadow and example and visible representation, and thus make known the exalted position occupied and consequently the great power possessed by a covering cherub. Because the Jews treated God's holy things with disregard, the things they counted holy and sacred were to be defiled and profaned by the nations and robbers entering in against them.
The verse stands in a vivid prophecy of judgment whose reach extends down to the present day. The chapter sets forth the character that should belong to God's people in the last days, a character of mourning and weeping rather than joking and jesting. It is a testimony to be heeded now, exposing how far many fall short of that character and calling for a change of conduct.
