Ezekiel 7:27

The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.

The opening portion of Ezekiel belongs to visions that reveal God ruling over the nations through His overruling providence. The verse describes a judgment in which the king mourns, the prince is clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land are troubled, while God deals with them after their own way and judges them according to their deserts, repaying conduct with just sentence so that through that retribution those judged know that He is the LORD. It belongs to a graphic prophecy of judgment that reaches down to the present day, with an application in some particulars to the present. The chapter foretells a coming time of unprecedented trouble for the nations before Christ's glorious appearing, associated with the outpouring of the seven last plagues. It shows the character that should belong to God's people in the last days, namely mourning and weeping instead of joking and jesting.
