Ezekiel 8:12
Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth. Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth.
The verse was shown in vision in the sixth year of Zedekiah. In that vision seventy of the ancients of the house of Israel, men who should have been spiritual leaders among the people, were offering incense before idolatrous representations that had been brought into hidden chambers within the sacred precincts of the temple court. They were thus engaging in heathen practices in secret. At the same time they flattered themselves that the Lord did not see them and blasphemously declared that the Lord had forsaken the earth.
The same self-deception belongs to all who commit hidden sins, who feel secure because God is patient and conclude from His forbearance that He does not see them or has abandoned the earth. God knows every secret sin, however, and will expose the hypocrisy and hidden deeds that people try to conceal.
