Ezekiel 8:5

Then said he unto me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.

Lifted eyes toward the north disclosed an idolatrous figure stationed northward at the gate belonging to the altar, set directly in the entryway. Its placement was not hidden or distant but at the very entrance to the place of worship and sacrifice. The figure is called the image of jealousy because it embodies idolatry that stirs jealousy and brings grief to the Spirit of God.

That same image stands for the spirit of envy and rivalry when it is allowed entrance among God's workers, as seen between the publishing houses at Battle Creek and Oakland. Neither institution is to belittle the other nor to act against its interests, for depreciating words and opposing efforts spring from jealousy. Such jealousy does injury to God's work and must be put away so that both institutions can labor in harmony.
