Ezra 10:31

And of the sons of Harim; Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

Ezra 10:31 belongs to the detailed account of the people's separation from forbidden foreign alliances, a practical reform that prepared them to understand and follow God's law. It names Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah and Shimeon from the family of Harim among those who had taken foreign wives and were listed in connection with putting away those wives. That putting away extended also to their children in Ezra's reform of casting out the foreign wives and their children.

Ezra 10:31 belongs to God's clear counsel about marriage that is to be read, prayerfully considered, and cheerfully obeyed. Marriage must be entered only in the Lord, by carefully consulting the word of God and walking agreeably to it and by studying the duties of marriage before entering it. Such heedfulness escapes bitter anguish of heart, painful regret for long years, frequent disappointment in that honorable estate, and repentance that is at once too soon and too late.
