Ezra 2:24

The children of Azmaveth, forty and two.

The verse stands in the register of those who had already returned to Jerusalem to their own land in answer to Cyrus's decree or proclamation to rebuild the temple, marking the beginning of the temple work. That return was made with Zerubbabel in the first year of Cyrus. In that company the verse counts forty-two children or descendants of Azmaveth who went up to Jerusalem.

The whole returning company numbered 42,360 persons in all. Those who reckoned it in round numbers put it at nearly fifty thousand in all. Those already returned were distinct from the many Jews who still remained in Babylon and were still invited to return.
