Ezra 2:35

The children of Senaah, three thousand and six hundred and thirty.

The children of Senaah, numbering 3,630, are listed as part of the record of the return from exile under Cyrus, whose decree began the work of rebuilding the temple. The entry belongs to the register of those who responded to Cyrus's decree or proclamation and went up from Babylon to Jerusalem to their own land with Zerubbabel in the first year of Cyrus. That register records 42,360 persons who had already returned. With the rest of the list, the entry contributes to the count showing that nearly fifty thousand Jews returned to their own land after Cyrus's proclamation.

Their return meant the captivity had ended in the sense that the people were free to go back, even though many Jews remained in exile. That completed return stands before the invitation in Zechariah 2:6-7 to the Jews who still remained in Babylon to return to Jerusalem, an invitation afterward answered when a large number went up with Ezra to Jerusalem. The return under Cyrus began the work of rebuilding the temple, and the account of the returned exiles and the rebuilding in Ezra 1-6 provides the historical setting for Haggai's message, which belongs to the period of that rebuilding.
