Ezra 2:42
The children of the porters: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, in all an hundred thirty and nine. The children of the porters: the children of Shallum, the children of Ater, the children of Talmon, the children of Akkub, the children of Hatita, the children of Shobai, in all an hundred thirty and nine.
The verse belongs to the record of those who returned to Jerusalem in response to Cyrus's decree and offer after the captivity ended. That return was led by Zerubbabel in the first year of Cyrus and concerns those who had already returned, distinct from the Jews who still remained in Babylon and were then invited to return. The whole returning company numbered 42,360 persons.
The return is also described as nearly fifty thousand Jews returning in response to Cyrus's offer. Within that list, the verse names the families of the porters, or gatekeepers, and gives their total as 139.
