Ezra 2:47

The children of Giddel, the children of Gahar, the children of Reaiah,

The verse names the children or descendants of Giddel, Gahar, and Reaiah. It is one entry in the list of families and people who returned from captivity to Jerusalem and to their own land in response to Cyrus's decree or proclamation, going up with Zerubbabel. The return recorded in the chapter took place in the first year of Cyrus. The number of those already returned is given as 42,360 persons, distinct from the many Jews who still remained in Babylon.

The return described in the chapter is also reckoned as nearly fifty thousand Jews. The surrounding account belongs to the period of the rebuilding of the temple, the same historical setting as Haggai's message. The verse belongs to the biblical account of life in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah, a historical setting discussed in connection with archaeological discoveries from Babylonian lands.
