Ezra 2:5

The children of Arah, seven hundred seventy and five.

Ezra 2:5 belongs to the list in Ezra 2 of the names and numbers of the Israelites who returned from Babylonian captivity to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel in the first year of Cyrus under his proclamation to rebuild the temple, forming the historical setting for Haggai's work. The verse records 775 descendants of Arah among the returnees. The returning group numbered 42,360 people.

Nearly fifty thousand Jews accepted Cyrus's offer and returned to their own land. Those who held the fuller count reckoned the returnees as numbering 49,897 in all. That was a small response to Cyrus's decree, which was broad enough to invite both the ten tribes and the two tribes. This return shows that the captivity had ended in the sense that the Jews were free to leave, even though many remained in exile.

It belongs to the record in Ezra 1-2 of the temple begun under the decree of Cyrus, and does not belong to the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem in B.C. 457 in the seventh year of Artaxerxes.
