Zerubbabel and the High Priest Lead the Returning Exilesby emmanuel_higgins

Ezra 2:66 belongs to the record of the return from captivity in Babylon to Judea and Jerusalem after the decree of Cyrus to restore the house of the Lord. That return was led by Zerubbabel as governor, a descendant of King David, with Joshua associated with him as high priest. Those who returned were about fifty thousand in number, a happy company and a remnant of the Israelites scattered through the Medo-Persian provinces. Their long journey across the desert wastes was accomplished in safety.

The verse gives the number and substance of that company by listing its possessions, which included seven hundred thirty-six horses and two hundred forty-five mules. In gratitude to God for His mercies, the returned company at once undertook to reestablish what had been broken down and destroyed. The chief of the fathers led in offering of their substance to defray the expense of rebuilding the temple, and the people followed by giving freely of their meager store.
