Ezra 2:68
And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place: And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place:
The verse stands in the return of the exiles under Zerubbabel and Joshua following the decree of Cyrus. Those who returned were only a small remnant, while many Israelites stayed behind in Medo-Persia instead of coming back to help restore the temple services. When they came to Jerusalem, some of the chief fathers of the families freely gave of their resources to set up the house of God again on its former place. Their giving was according to their ability, and included contributions of gold and silver and garments for the priests for the work. The people at large followed the example of the leaders, giving also out of their limited means.
