Israelites Raise the Temple Foundation Stonesby KalebRosendahl

Ezra 3:8

Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.

About two years after Medo-Persia rose, Cyrus king of Medo-Persia decreed that all the Israelites could return to Canaan, at the close of the seventy years' captivity. Nearly fifty thousand returned to Jerusalem, and they were only a remnant of all the Israelites scattered throughout the provinces of Medo-Persia, because many chose to remain in the land of captivity instead of going with their brethren to help restore the temple services. Zerubbabel the governor of Judea worked closely with Jeshua or Joshua the high priest in leading the remnant back and in re-establishing the ancient worship at Jerusalem. In the second year after the exiles arrived at Jerusalem, which was the second year of Cyrus, Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the returned community with the remnant of their brethren began the work of the house of the Lord.

They appointed the Levites from twenty years old and upward to set forward the work, and Zerubbabel laid the cornerstone of the temple. The returned exiles willingly prepared building materials for the work, including stones left from Solomon's temple and new materials. When God's people are gathered where God has directed them, they are to honor Him at once by rising up to build a house for Him without delay, with earnest effort and faith of the right quality, done in haste under God's favor and guidance rather than put off longer. The house gives them a place to worship God in humbleness of mind, to kneel before Him, and to serve Him becomingly and in order, and when finished it is to be dedicated to God as a witness to the truth they believe.
