Haggai Calls the Builders to the Ruined Templeby emmanuel_higgins

Ezra 5:2

Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

In response to God's messages through the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, Zerubbabel and Jeshua renewed their courage and rose up to begin rebuilding the house of God at Jerusalem. The messages of Haggai and Zechariah stirred the people to resume the work. Their willing obedience as leaders encouraged the rest of the people to follow. As the work continued, Haggai and Zechariah helped the builders with God's messages.

The builders labored diligently and by faith though provisions were scarce and failing, with famine, ruined fields, and unfriendly peoples surrounding them. They kept working by faith despite harassment, trusting God's promises of help and blessing. Through Haggai and Zechariah God encouraged them with assurance that His word would not fail and that their faith would be rewarded.

The work went on for months before Darius confirmed the earlier decree and ordered that the builders not be hindered. The promised future glory of the temple was to be fulfilled when the Desire of all nations appeared there as humanity's Teacher and Saviour.
