Galatians 1:4
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
Christ gave himself as the atoning sacrifice for human sin, redeeming fallen people both by his obedient life and by bearing the penalty of disobedience, and he is the sinner's only hope of salvation. The message of that sacrifice reveals God's love and leads people to ask how they can be saved. His sacrifice delivers people from sin's bondage and from this present evil world, and through faith in Christ they receive the Spirit and become children of God.
The sacrifice was given according to the will of God and our Father, and God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ stand together at the head as high, holy, mighty powers. Paul wisely begins by presenting the paternal character of God, magnifying the meaning of Our Father and revealing God's fatherly relation to human beings. That relation is known by being filled with the Spirit of Christ.
It is God's will to free people from sin, to cleanse them from sin, to make them His children through faith in Christ and the receiving of the Spirit, and to enable them to live a holy life. Prayer for freedom from sin and deliverance from sin is therefore always according to God's will and is granted at once with certain answer. Prayer for earthly blessings is different, for its answer may be delayed or God may give something other than what was asked.
Deliverance from this present evil world is the goal and end of a continuing conflict, not release from opposition during the work, so those who choose to serve God must stand in the struggle against evil until God delivers them. That rescue gives believers strength from the world to come amid temptations and trials. It means living as a Christian who refuses to be ruled by worldly maxims and customs and serves God with an undivided heart whatever others do or say.
Deliverance means living in obedience to God by willing separation from every wrong habit, in the solemn responsibility of living now in this present evil world. Those who have no love for God work constantly against the best interests of soul and body, while those who awake to the importance of obedience are softened and subdued, filled with gratitude, tenderness, and love as they know Christ as their friend. Knowing Christ as friend often does more for recovery from sickness than the best treatment, and for suffering sick people that realization helps recovery, though spiritual ministry and physical treatment are both essential and must go hand in hand.
Christ gives this deliverance because He is touched with the feeling of human infirmities and suffered and died for each person, so yielding to the world denies Him and ranks with His crucifiers who drove spikes through His hands and feet and fastened Him to the accursed tree. The present age is evil, and children left without their parents' watchful care are exposed to it. Their salvation depends on God turning their thoughts toward Christ's cross and leading them to accept pardon for their sins.
