Galatians 2:2

And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

Paul's going up by revelation was his going to Jerusalem under divine direction. There he privately laid before the leading apostles the gospel he was preaching among the Gentiles, together with the dispute that had arisen over circumcision and the ceremonial law. He sought that private interview first because bringing the question at once before the larger council risked arousing prejudice, dividing the council, and defeating the whole purpose of his visit. In that private setting the leading apostles recognized that God had called him to preach to the Gentiles. The outcome in the council was agreement that Gentile converts were not bound by the ceremonial law.
