Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
As Isaac was, believers are the children of promise whose mother is Jerusalem above. A person becomes such a child through faith in Jesus, purchased and redeemed by His precious life because He loves them. The mother and the children are distinct, so the church as the children cannot also be the Lamb's wife, for if the church were the wife none would be left to be the children.
Together with Galatians 4:21-31, the verse gives clear and convincing plain light on the covenants, and the position on the covenants drawn from it is the true light. Every candid, unprejudiced, truly converted mind receives it. Turning from that light comes from fear that the law question in Galatians will have to be accepted and from an unconverted state unprepared either to establish or refute a position. It repeats the manner of those who hung on Christ's words with spies to repeat, misinterpret and twist His words by unsanctified minds in order to deceive the people, make false issues, and cloud and mislead minds.
In giving Jesus as the one precious Gift, the heavenly Father gives with Him all the treasures of heaven. The child of promise may come to God in prayer as Father, regarded as His child with most tender pity, and will not be forsaken though the weakest and feeblest, for He abides faithful to those who put trust in Him. Making mistakes and having life darkened with errors does not mean the heavenly Father has forsaken them or ceased to love them. Jesus loves them still, His eye is upon them, and He makes a way of escape in temptation.
