For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
All the law is fulfilled in loving one's neighbor as oneself, and especially what the law requires concerning duty to fellow human beings is met in that love. That fulfillment stands together with loving God with all heart and mind and soul and strength, and this twofold love brings glory to God and peace and goodwill on earth. This love is practical godliness and the right use of the freedom Christ gives, to be held firmly and stood fast in. It means serving one another in love rather than using liberty to serve selfish desires, to indulge in corrupt practices, or to use it unlawfully.
The love stands opposed to hatred and strife and expresses itself in helping and serving one another. It creates unity among believers and guards against division and contention and the spiritual ruin division brings. Among believers this love is to be cherished and shown in deference and respect and unity, without division or contention or prejudice or empty boasting or provoking or envying. Experiencing this love requires doing what the Word says, examining the heart for love for God, being renewed by the Holy Spirit, and representing the character of Christ. Its secret is union with Christ as the center, so that drawing near to Him draws people near to one another.
Its presence is shown by the fruit of the Spirit of love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and self-control. It is shown by putting the selfish nature to death, living by the Spirit, gently restoring one caught in fault in meekness, and carrying one another's burdens, which fulfills the law of Christ. Indulging contention cherishes what Satan began in heaven and caused his fall. Biting and devouring one another violates this command and leads to being consumed by one another. The Holy Spirit imparts this love to human hearts in every age, because love is the living principle of human brotherhood.
