For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
In Jesus Christ neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, so outward religious standing, profession, ceremony, or lack of it counts for nothing and cannot take the place of faith or make anyone accepted, effective, or fruitful with God. What counts is genuine living active faith which works by love, not mere belief, bare assent, knowledge of truth, or agreement with doctrines, for saying I believe is not enough. That faith purifies, cleanses, and sanctifies the soul, heart, and inner life from selfishness, defilement, and impurity, and makes holy character. Genuine faith leads as its result to obedience to God's law and doing His will, receiving Christ as both Redeemer and Ruler with the will surrendered to obey at any cost. This working faith is proved by Christlikeness and fruits of love in compassionate benevolent action, unity with brethren, and active service that benefits others and cannot remain hidden.
Outward Rites Avail Nothing
In Jesus Christ neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, so outward religious status, privilege, profession, standing, or lack of it counts for nothing and cannot take the place of faith or be grounds for acceptance, effectiveness, or fruitfulness with God. External privileges and high profession of acceptance with God count for nothing, and religious status or its absence does not make a person right with God, for what matters is faith that works through love. That working faith is proved by Christlikeness and not by church membership, and its presence is known by its fruits of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, crucifixion of the flesh, walking in the Spirit, freedom from vainglory, envy and provoking, restoring one overtaken in a fault in meekness, and bearing one another's burdens to fulfill the law of Christ. This love cherished among brethren removes prejudice, contention and division and joins believers in the same mind and judgment through union with Christ the center, and it shapes a life of humble, diligent service, including business and other work, joining believers to Christ so they can serve in God's work. Such faith receives and practices truth, brings a person out of error into the light, purifies the soul and transforms the character, whereas rigid obedience without contrition, tenderness, or love cannot bring a person into harmony with God. Only sincere faith secures entrance into the city of God, and that faith acts through love and purifies the soul, expressing itself in life and character in love for God and for brethren, which makes a person a power in the world and in the church as the sign of Christianity and the witness that he is a child of God.
This true faith recovers the backslider from worldly entanglements and holds him in daily service that also keeps his brethren from backsliding, which is the work required of every soul, and even one who has lost the liberty once enjoyed in Christ can recover it by looking to Jesus and again revealing this loving, purifying faith in life and character. Timothy was circumcised not because God required it or because it was essential to the gospel, but on advice to remove Jewish prejudice and objection and avoid hindering preaching, which did not change the teaching that circumcision or uncircumcision is nothing and what matters is the gospel of Christ. Circumcision and uncircumcision have no value in themselves and no value as grounds for faith or acceptance, and the practical accommodation to remove a source of Jewish prejudice and a barrier to ministry among Jews did not mean treating circumcision as required by God or as essential to the gospel. Paul's willingness to advise it to remove a possible Jewish objection and avoid hindering his work did not change his teaching that circumcision itself was nothing.
Outward forms, ceremonies, rites, church membership, names in church books, bodily displays, emotional excitement, large buildings, rich furnishings, feasts, and display do not qualify for heaven or bring influence and success. The influence and success of Christian work come not from costly buildings, rich furnishings, display, imposing buildings, or tables provided with delicacies, but from grace surrounding the believer and the Holy Spirit working on mind and heart, making the believer a savor of life unto life so God can bless the work. Faith that works by love and purifies the soul is the only qualification required for the kingdom of heaven, and true religion does not consist in forms or ceremonies, outward attractions or outward display, but in pure character as of supreme importance, with true circumcision as worship in spirit and truth rather than reliance on outward rites or hypocritical display. Christ dispensed with all pomp to train the Jews to see the object of that which was to be abolished by His own true offering as the living Sacrifice, in whom all Jewish ceremony and typical service finds its fulfillment, so the verse has no place in a religion built on ceremonies, human rules, or confidence in merit. Circumcision and uncircumcision stand for two classes in the last days, those who claim to believe present truth yet take part in politics and mingle with the contending elements of the world and the worldly themselves, and both dishonor God by party spirit and contention, do a work He never gave them to do, and will be condemned and destroyed together without distinction. This faith purifies the soul and is shown in caring for people's physical and spiritual needs and helping them turn to God, and in visible acts of love, gratitude, and devotion to Jesus, of which Mary's service expressing her recognition of His worth was an example and lesson the disciples needed to learn.
Living Faith Defined Clearly
What counts in Christ is genuine living active faith that works by love, not mere belief, profession, bare assent, nominal belief, agreement with doctrines, knowledge of truth, or belief in facts about Christ. Saying I believe is not enough and is dangerous deception, for even devils believe and tremble without being saved, while saving faith is not firm holding of doctrines or outward assent that quiets the conscience while truth stays in the outer court. It is a living principle that acts through love, cleanses the inner life, controls words, thoughts and actions, and makes a person a daily hourly follower of Christ, so that only when the Word is intelligently and practically understood and obeyed does it become a means to a saving end. This faith involves supreme love for God, reliance on Him, and complete daily consecration joining feelings, interests and service to Christ, drawing strength and grace from God so that through Christ sins are reckoned to Jesus and His righteousness imputed, with sharing in His victories and eternal life. Humility, meekness and obedience are not faith itself but its fruits, and truth must take root and be shown in spirit and words, with meekness and humility as means to make pure and holy, learned by sharing suffering, bearing the yoke and learning.
Counting saving faith is more than accepting Christ as God's Son and Saviour, holding right ideas, speaking truth, or occasional kind acts while self remains strong. It is sincere, intelligent, wholehearted personal trust laying hold of Christ as sin-pardoning Saviour and only hope, clinging to a crucified and risen Saviour's merits, engaging the affections, controlling life, and resting upon the wonderful provision made. It is assent of the understanding to the Word that binds the heart to service, not idle but active, working by love and purifying the soul, through which by the redemption in Christ believers are justified freely. It is living trust taking God at His word, grasping promises and expressed in a life honoring Him, leading to love, obedience and faithful service, putting truth into practice with watchfulness and prayer, removing what displeases Christ and giving power to overcome defects of character, so that mere religious name, half experience, nominal faith or waiting without obedience cannot save. When plans are crossed, unkindness, hardness and wounding actions reveal an unsanctified heart that misrepresents Christ and can drive others toward temptation and away from faith, whereas faith working by love is shown in changed character treating others with compassion, confessing openly and becoming a doer of the Word.
This faith is pure and unadulterated, firm in texture admitting no thread of selfishness, just such love as Christ revealed in His life and fruit of a subdued will. It emanates from God and cannot be possessed until self dies so Christ can live within, and must be had every day through the deep working of the Spirit. It is genuine reliance upon the naked Word, taking God at His word and believing He will do as He said, proved by actions, advancing and working without rolling backward or standing still, depending on God not self and cherishing no unbelief. It is not tested by feeling, sight or emotion and is not ruled by feeling, but relies firmly on God, appropriates Scripture and lives by Thus saith the Lord, letting all actions be controlled thereby, resting in His love. It is the faculty by which the Word is received and practiced, flowing as power from knowing God, putting aside feeling and selfish desires, walking humbly, applying promises to all occasions, trusting implicitly His faithfulness to sanctify character and lay hold on power so all things are possible, with fruits of the Spirit seen in life; it works on the faith side by believing, trusting, speaking faith and hope and courage, keeping the mind stayed on God, knowing Christ's love as revealed, having praise in heart and lips, talking of Christ as Redeemer, calling others to behold Him, and confirmed as faith is spoken and encouraged rather than in formal empty prayer, with inward transformation made visible in outward evidence.
The gold tried in the fire in Revelation 3:18 is this faith which works by love, which brings harmony with God and leads the soul to God. Without its purifying influence much work and activity without Christlike love are not enough and one cannot belong to heaven's family, and unless faith has this purifying influence it is worthless. With it controlling love steadies character against wavering and evil, the intellect is enlarged while it purifies, ennobles and sanctifies, giving virtuous character that keeps the commandments, obtains the white robe of character, has sins confessed, forsaken and blotted out, and keeps the name in the Lamb's Book of Life when cases pass in review in judgment, needed by youth, mature and aged, especially aged pilgrims descending toward the western sun to be established beyond pollution.
The rulers who believed Christ was the Son of God lacked this living active faith because ambition and fear of exclusion kept them from confessing Him. Faith working by love would have moved them to confess despite cost, leads to obeying the Word, and secures the heavenly treasure. This faith is given to those brought to knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus, bringing enlarged views of God and more correct estimate of the character to be formed. It comes through intelligent understanding of Scripture viewing the cross aright, giving sure foundation and true discernment, putting on vantage ground, purifying from all hereditary and cultivated imperfections, while failure to receive truth brings confusion, and in days of terrible wickedness every soul needs this experience gained by searching Scripture and keeping from unbelief.
Faith without works is dead and produces no good. Profession, theory, knowledge or measure of faith with a heart opposed to truth does not act because self has not died, and is worthless unless self dies and Christ's life of obedience is lived. Living connection with Christ is revealed and proved by works and deeds, and only love expressed in works counts toward moral fitness for everlasting life, with the use of talents examined, the life and power of God not shown until that holy acting faith is seen, and faith left by itself dead. Faith without fruit or likeness to Christ is false faith, and saying believe only believe while refusing plain commands is presumption not trust; trust and works belong together in contrast to trusting works alone while rejecting Christ, for genuine trust receives Christ and yields perfect obedience, loyalty and flawless righteousness clothed with His righteousness to stand without blemish.
Faith in truth diligently seeks heavenly treasure, shares what is received, gives truth so others receive its saving principles, and grows as a faithful steward brings eternal unchanging truth from Old and New Testaments. Faith is living when actively working through pure holy love to purify, sanctify and transform character to reflect Christ, while faith not working in love is dead and powerless to change character, and genuine religion shapes even small details.
Faith Purifies the Soul
In Jesus Christ outward privilege and high profession count for nothing and cannot take the place of faith, and only sincere faith secures entrance into the city of God. That faith acts through love and purifies the soul, heart, spirit and inner life from defilement, dross, idols, selfishness, sensuality, and moral and spiritual impurity, making holy and constituting Christian character and experience. Expressing itself in life and character in love for God and for brethren, it makes a person a power in the world and in the church as the sign of Christianity and the witness that he is a child of God. It leads to doing God's will, for doing God's will is the result of possessing it, and it is proved by Christlikeness and known by fruits of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, crucifixion of the flesh, walking in the Spirit, freedom from vainglory, envy and provoking, restoring one overtaken in fault in meekness, and bearing burdens to fulfill the law of Christ. Cherished among brethren it removes prejudice, contention and division and joins believers in the same mind and judgment through union with Christ the center, while rigid obedience without contrition, tenderness or love cannot bring harmony with God, faith not sustained by works is dead, and those to receive everlasting life must gain moral fitness through this purification. It recovers the backslider from worldly entanglements and holds him in daily service that also keeps brethren from backsliding, so that even one who has lost liberty once enjoyed in Christ can recover it by looking to Jesus and again revealing this loving, purifying faith.
It cleanses from every hereditary and cultivated imperfection, objectionable trait, evil tendency, and peculiarity of disposition that acts like parasites sapping and destroying spirituality. Subduing self and transforming natural temperament, it causes fretful, critical and impatient traits to pass away and sanctifies temper, disposition, words and actions. It gives pure, holy, sanctified character such as humanity would have kept by loyalty to God, comes by intelligent understanding of the Word revealing Christ, binds believers in fellowship and mutual dependence instead of fault-finding by golden links of love, and makes them as a light laboring unitedly under the Holy Spirit with success dependent on faith and prayer. It must be brought into life and practice through purification by the Spirit in mind and heart, overcoming partialities, lust for forbidden things and glorifying of self, for unless received no unfeigned fervent mutual love can be borne, and through enlightenment, endeavor, faith and prayer the believer partakes of the divine nature escaped from corruption through lust to love God supremely and neighbor as self. Where it is lacking character is unchanged, the heart unpurified, and the mind open to temptation and controlled by a spirit wanting its own way, criticizing Christ's words and works and refusing service, but where acted upon through improving opportunities and putting truth into practice it cleanses from selfishness and covetousness and changes character for the better.
It sanctifies soul, body, spirit, intellect, mind, and even bodily organs, faculties and thoughts into conformity with God and obedience to Christ. Received into mind and soul, God's Word produces this working faith unto consecration, devotion and sanctification, conforming character after the divine likeness while each keeps individuality. Acceptable faith purifies to be like Christ and leads to thorough repentance and obedience, whereas merely outward or surface response will not stand in trial. It feeds on the living Word, brings it into practical life until it governs the whole person, persuades and softens rather than merely convincing intellect, submits the will to God, directs aspirations heavenward, and makes ministry effective when held fast, lived and imparted as the word of life. Cherished in every habit as the living principle of becoming like Jesus, it turns desires upward and fills the heart with joy in anticipation of the future.
Through the Spirit's ministration this faith can change even those looked upon as stoical, hopeless, unfit to be taught, irreclaimable and utterly degenerate. It causes stupidity of great ignorance to pass away, awakens the dull and clouded mind and breaks its fetters, frees sin's slave by divine power, beams Christ's righteousness into chambers of mind and heart, brings spiritual life to be seen, makes brutishness and inclination to vice disappear, overcomes ignorance, enlightens the mind, and restores the degraded to common humanity. It is needed alongside healing of the sin-sick soul and cleansing of selfishness, self-love, self-esteem and self-exaltation. Lack of it leaves powerless and unable to receive grand elevating truths, while possessing it gives the Lord's joy as strength, brings Christ to abide in the heart, gives life to mental powers, enables correct sight of invisible things, and moves those near the end to cooperate with joyful rather than gloomy language.
It purifies from slothful habits, carnal thoughts and desires, deception, prevarication, covetousness, pride, idols and Satan's suggestions. It belongs to those whose hearts are turned toward God and whose lives reflect the indwelling Saviour. Impressed sufficiently on the mind it holds firmly to Christ in dependence on the All-sufficient One, keeps from denying truth and grieving the Spirit by false witness, and leads teachers of truth to avoid dissension. Love cleanses pride and removes idols, for outward activity alone does not prove religion, and God's servants must reveal this faith with zeal in watchfulness unto prayer, humble heart-searching, readiness to detect defects, and avoidance of self-exaltation lest labor weaken. After sin is cleansed the Lord carries on a keen searching work bringing humiliating discoveries of nonconformity with His law, and then this faith enters, takes possession of the soul-temple, purifies, and molds human attributes after God's similitude.
As a pervading active leaven it assimilates the whole person, with vital penetrating energy permeating everything entered, beginning inward conversion in the heart then working outward into practice and confession unto righteousness and salvation. When truth is received it works like good leaven until every power is brought into subjection to God's will, making truth a controlling power and changing life as leaven changes dough. Then shining is as unavoidable as the sun after separation from rubbish and letting Christ's peace rule, and it gives spiritual life, lifts into higher purer atmosphere, makes partakers of divine nature with spirit, life, health and soundness, exercises powers unto righteousness, brings Christ to dwell within, and reveals the Spirit in healthy growth. It tolerates no vice, detects everything out of harmony with God's law and implants divine virtues, giving power to overcome selfish pettish disposition and every disagreeable action which must be cut away since none can unite with God's family unchanged, with power depending not on circumstances or learned persons but on ever-present help. Received through the Word, it calls to put away hardheartedness, act justly and benevolently, and live by Christ's Word, in contrast to outward ritual and Pharisaical pretense which God does not accept.
Keeping it untarnished by selfishness gives experience, knowledge and understanding of its results, while giving time and strength to minor things deprives of that experience. It must be exercised daily, cultivated and strengthened by surrender to be purified, refined, ennobled and sanctified through truth and lived out in loving one another as Christ loved, for without cultivation people grow away from Christ. When not exercised daily, bitterness, envy and evil suspicions can lie dormant then reappear dishonoring God and truth, and trust and love must be cultivated especially where unbelief and hardness weaken the church. This faith purifies from moral defilement, and steady faith bears fruit when Christ's words abide in the heart.
Faith Obeys God's Law
Genuine faith leads to obedience to God's law and to doing God's will as its result, for doing God's will is what possessing this faith produces. The faith essential for salvation is not mere nominal belief or a passing impulse but an abiding principle deriving vital power from Christ, active and accomplishing something real by bringing the soul under discipline, lifting it from defilement, joining it to Christ until it appropriates His virtue for its need, refining, purifying and ennobling the character and cleansing the soul itself. Saying believe, only believe while refusing to obey God's plain commands is not genuine trust but presumption, for trust without works is dead, and in contrast to trusting in works alone for salvation while rejecting Christ, genuine trust receives Christ and yields perfect obedience to God's law, unswerving loyalty and righteousness without flaw in character, clothed with Christ's righteousness to stand without blemish before God. Genuine faith is proved by speaking according to the law and the testimony and by keeping God's commandments, with the principles of the Bible brought into everyday life to enlighten conscience and regulate conduct. True faith is more than belief in God's word; it is submission of the will, yielding of the heart and fixing of the affections upon Him, operating through love and purifying the soul, renewing the heart in the image of God, changing a heart that was not subject to the law of God into a heart that delights in His holy precepts, and fulfilling the righteousness of the law in those who walk after the Spirit.
Accepting Christ as Redeemer also means accepting Him as Ruler and obeying His commandments, and this working faith shows allegiance to God by bringing the will into harmony with God and welcoming the light He sends. Perfect, confiding trust in Christ as Saviour cannot exist until the will is surrendered to obey His commandments in complete harmony with the will of God, and this obedience gives evidence of allegiance, and then faith works by love. The truth that works by love must be obeyed, for obedience to it purifies the soul and brings a person to the Rock, where self-will is broken. Saving faith is not mere belief, for even Satan believed and trembled, and it does not mean Christ has done all so people can keep transgressing the commandments without accountability, which is a great deception; it means taking a firm position to not violate the commandments at any cost and living in a spiritual condition that can teach others spiritual things. Such faith does not treat God's truth as bondage or complain about the path of obedience, for it comes from a heart yielded to God and is seen in a life shaped by Christ's principles.
This faith accomplishes something for character and life by making the Lord's great standard of righteousness the standard of life and bringing the heart into obedience to the divine precepts, demanding not only outward profession of godliness but a pure heart and spotless character, in contrast to a loose religion that casts contempt on the law of God while claiming holiness. The difference between a good man and a wicked man does not come from natural goodness of disposition but from divine power transforming human nature through believing in Christ, so that faith working by love purifies the soul from all defilement, conforms the life to Christ's likeness, requires surrender of the entire will, brings daily sanctification, produces good fruit, Christlike attributes, integrity, uprightness and true benevolence, and enables keeping of all His commandments. Those determined to be obedient to every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God have this faith, are given power of intellect to discern between righteousness and unrighteousness, and reveal God to the world. It makes God a person's strength, keeps from falling into temptation, and gives grace and courage to live up to the principles revealed in the law of God as an expression of His character. It requires a pure, clean heart and good conscience, shown in loving God supremely and loving neighbors as self, on which hang all the law and the prophets, while steadfast faith in Christ as accepted personal Saviour makes precious work possible and advances His cause to bring many to personal knowledge of the truth.
Believers are justified through Christ's merit, not their own, but justification does not free them to do wrong; faith purifies the soul and bears visible fruit in good works, including caring for the sick, poor, fatherless, widows and destitute, and Christ's character is revealed in those united with Him. Transgressors of God's law, whether priests, rulers, scribes or Pharisees, must reach a much higher righteousness than externals and formal obedience, namely faith working by love to God and love to neighbors under the illumination of the true Light revealing what they are; this righteousness must spring from the heart and extend throughout the being, within and without, bringing heart and life into conformity with God's revealed will, and the same need stands where many lack spiritual discernment and set aside God's precepts for human laws while serving God in a selfish way and passing by neighbors. That obedience is the test and proof that a person is chosen in Christ, born of God, shares the divine nature and is one of God's elect. Faith working by love means daily practicing of the word in consistent Christian action, and this lived obedience is the daily evidence of a living church and the sign to the world of the truth of doctrines professed, declaring that there is a people whose safety is in clinging to the Bible in unmistakable distinction from putting human wisdom and authority in place of God's.
This faith is shown by doing one's best while trusting God and willingly obeying Him in every circumstance, and it purifies the soul and leads to doing God's will and practicing righteousness, for in Christ neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has value. It purifies the soul and gives great courage to obey God willingly under all circumstances, and it belongs only to those who do their best while putting trust in God. Fear that obedience will reduce earthly gain is no reason to hesitate, for such hesitation displeases the Lord and lacks this faith. It belongs to those under the control of the Ruler of the universe who are determined to obey every word out of the mouth of God, exalting the law of Christ's kingdom by willing obedience, and this faith gives power of intellect to see the difference between righteousness and unrighteousness and reveals God to the world.
Without that faith, men may profess to keep God's commandments and often dwell on the importance of obeying God's law while failing to work righteousness and walking against that law, and they refuse to heed the messengers God sends to warn them and turn them to the paths of righteousness. Claiming to believe truth or to possess advanced faith does not excuse indulging in sin, for faith that permits a married man to give his affections to another woman is not the faith described but a deception serving Satan. Merely claiming or exalting faith does not make a person sanctified, and faith that conflicts with Christ's teaching and tolerates sexual impurity is not saving faith; those who do so need conversion and cleansing from sin before they can be counted as children of truth.
Faith Works Through Love
In Christ what counts is working faith, proved not by church membership but by Christlikeness, and its presence is known by love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, crucifixion of the flesh, walking in the Spirit, freedom from vainglory, envy and provoking, restoring one overtaken in fault in meekness, and bearing one another's burdens to fulfill the law of Christ. Cherished among brethren that love removes prejudice, contention and division and joins believers in the same mind and judgment through union with Christ the center. It brings the heart under the controlling power of truth and makes truth definite and practical, giving genuine credentials so that those who live and present truth as it is in Jesus find response from hungering hearts. It is not a dry set of theories or a hard legal religion in a straitjacket without attractiveness, but the love of Jesus in the heart working outward in patience, gentleness, kindness, meekness and forbearance, melting cherished trains of thought, preconceived ideas and little feelings against one another, and commending itself even to the unconverted. Kept with steadfast principle and no compromise, it shows what truth has done in transformation of character and reveals its fruits in words and character through advanced knowledge of Jesus and reception of His love for God and neighbor.
It brings heaven's sunlight into daily life, lets truth reach the deepest recesses of the soul to cleanse everything unlike Christ, and fills the vacuum with attributes of Him who was pure and holy and undefiled, so all springs of the heart become fragrant flowers, a sweet savor of life unto life. It is active, purifies the soul, and shapes spirit, character and whole life, for the indwelling Saviour abides as a presence and His grace makes the follower Christlike in spirit, temper, meekness and humility. The pure doctrines of the gospel refine, ennoble and elevate, sanctifying judgment and influencing the whole life, never degrading or making the receiver coarse, rough or discourteous. It shapes speech, conduct, habits and deportment, prepares for the company of heavenly angels, leads to subdue self, let Christ mold differing traits, and live in love and harmony in a well-ordered life and godly speech. As a holy, uplifting, sanctifying power it softens and subdues jarring human nature, preserves the love for God that drew believers from the world, draws them from separate confederacies and detached parties into one harmonious whole in Christ, binds them by sacred cords of Christian love as they live the principles that separated them from the world, and through constraining love blends them in harmonious action at the cross.
It purifies from prejudice and unlikeness to Christ and conforms to His image, giving understanding of brethren as branches grafted into the same parent stock drawing sustenance from the same root. White and black alike are branches of the True Vine, saved through the same grace to enter the same heaven at last, blessed by the same God as sons and daughters, for there is no special heaven for the white man and another for the black man. Those who have it look with compassion and love upon Black people rather than regarding themselves superior because skin is white, and without it many with every advantage will find Black believers entering heaven before them. Joined closely to Christ it takes hold of eternal realities and lifts above prejudice of color or caste into a pure, heavenly, unselfish atmosphere, causing the heart to love as Christ loved. When the Holy Spirit is poured out it brings triumph of humanity over prejudice in seeking souls, so the color line is regarded very differently, and it is lived out by following the good Samaritan.
It is active in daily life through love for God and people, made visible in compassionate, benevolent actions that give significance and power to truth and can lead others to believe in Christ. It leads to good deeds in family and neighborhood, practical care for the poor, comfort for widows and orphans, a life kept unspotted, and cheerful use of means and influence for God's work, for religious profession or leaving good works to others is not living faith. It is shown by seeing and meeting needs, treating others with care one would want for oneself, and not selfishly leaving them to bear hardship while ignoring need. Its character is teaching the ignorant, reforming sinners, comforting the sorrowful, resisting oppression and injustice, fostering peace rather than strife, relieving physical distress, and caring for the sick, fatherless, destitute, hungry, naked and oppressed, treating even a despised stranger as brother and neighbor. Expressed in sympathetic, encouraging service to sufferers, it leads to unity with God rather than discontent and unhappiness.
Received into mind and soul, God's Word produces this working faith, purifies and sanctifies body, soul and spirit, and brings consecration and devotion, uniting converts with Christ in God. It brings the atmosphere of grace around the believer as the Holy Spirit works on mind and heart, making him a savor of life so God can bless the work, and binds workers by common sympathy and pure affection with love and respect as a telling influence of practical godliness. Unlike cold, repulsive, dark unbelief that only denies and destroys, the work of faith under all circumstances lifts the head in dignity and firm trust, revealing beauty and glory even in youthful self-denial in lifting Christ's cross on the path to the Father's home. So lived, the Word becomes assurance and convinces others by reason that truth is reality and not fable or mere enthusiasm. Constantly uniting to Jesus in oneness that distinguishes Christians, it leads to unity and mutual love, ends criticism, makes delight to honor God by obeying all commandments, and recognizes mutual duties and dependence rather than standing isolated. Without it divisions and coldness dishonor Christ, while with the will in entire obedience it brings Christ abiding within and unity and wise decisions as the Spirit works through the agent.
All who advocate truth must possess it, keeping steadfast principle with no compromise while showing transformation, making possessors kind and courteous lovers and makers of peace called children of God. It requires awakening out of sleep, heeding messages given, opening the heart's door to receive it, being born again, and cherishing for one another the love commanded, supplying the great present want of love, patience, forbearance and confidence needed by church and institutions. It cannot remain hidden or serve only the believer but leads to active service benefiting others and shining as light for all to see. It sustains good works as character is built, adding grace and good deeds step by step in sanctification. Always imparting to others blessings individually received, it must be revealed in life purifying from selfishness through practical interest in the hungry and afflicted, for faith without such works is dead, being alone.
It moves to serve others and relieve suffering even at personal cost, purifying from selfishness and bringing into close relation with God. It moves to help rescue others from deceptive power, to which baptism pledges commitment to live for Christ and labor with Him to save souls. Learned from Jesus, greatly needed with His grace, it moves to labor for bodily health and soul salvation, sharing Christ's mission to do good and heal, bearing decided testimony for present truth, and revealing God's merciful, gracious, forgiving character through purity, holiness, mercy, loving-kindness and compassion. Love is what gives an act value in heaven, and even a small act done from love is accepted and rewarded. Even giving possessions or dying as sacrifice is valueless if the heart lacks love expressed in helpful, tender, kind and noble conduct toward others. Without unselfish love professed faith is only empty noise like sounding brass and tinkling cymbal, speaking falsely against truth by those claiming to be God's children.
It is not sentimental feeling but Christlike love purifying the soul and leading to self-denial and self-sacrifice for souls, with external signs or bodily displays not making faith effective but a life shaped by love and service as its evidence. Loving others as Christ loved is fruit of receiving Christ and truth implanted in the heart, accompanying sanctification as life-giving power draws the whole person into harmony with God and develops His grace within. Looking to Calvary does not quiet to sleep in nonperformance but creates faith that works and purifies from selfishness, for laying hold of Christ is only beginning, stirring to constant labor of love and vigorous warfare against corrupt habits in the fight of faith. Believing truth, doing essential work, speaking truth as it is in Jesus, being kind and equitable, having right ideas, teaching, educating the young, dealing with the erring, and even reaching correct decisions are not this faith if done in a wrong spirit. Faith not working by love gives entirely incorrect ideas of Christianity and proves one no Christian, stirring worst passions and showing in bitterness, harsh zeal without knowledge, lack of self-control, and unchristlike harshness toward souls purchased by the Son, while resistance to correction, harshness and self-will show transforming work has not taken place.
A follower with it cannot remain sharp in deal, hardhearted and without sympathy, coarse in speech, full of pomposity and self-esteem, overbearing, or harsh in censure, for busy activities alone do not insure salvation though true justification by faith never ignores works. It is lacking when self-love crowds out love for Jesus and people follow selfish plans instead of seeking Christ and doing His will, for it should be evident in influence and character. True faith is shown in a life free from selfishness and covetousness, marked by Christlike words and deeds and zeal for good works, purifying from all defilement. Seen in Christlike spirit, meekness and humility, it cleanses evil traits, brings unity of the Spirit in bonds of peace, and requires pure undefiled religion. The Holy Spirit gives it effect by giving the mind of Christ, making a faithful worker who subdues self, represses evil inclination, and cuts away evil by faith and prayer rather than excusing faults, with indwelling Christ transforming the whole life.
It is expressed in loving service rather than mere profession. Faith, rather than human importance or any person's work, is what should be encouraged.
Faith Received and Grown
Faith that works by love is exercised by receiving Christ as personal Saviour, continuing to believe in Him and abiding in Him at all times and under all circumstances. This receiving and abiding is man's part in working with God for the saving of his own soul as a laborer together with God, constantly representing Christ's character. Christ is the Author of this faith and calls for and demands its constant exercise, through which believers receive a continuous supply of grace and nourishment sufficient for every need of the soul from His words. Its constant daily and hourly exercise unites the believer with Christ, purifies the soul from all defilement, brings forgiveness of sins, sanctifies unto eternal life, and grows the believer up into the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus.
Looking to Calvary and to Christ's death and sacrifice creates and awakens this active faith that moves to work and purifies the soul from all selfishness. Genuine faith is motive and power to act and do what is right, never an excuse to neglect duty or works or to quiet the soul to sleep in nonperformance. Laying hold of Christ by faith is only the beginning of work, for faith uniting to Christ stirs the soul to activity and springs into constant labor of love in Bible religion, with salvation through faith in His sacrifice which fully meets heaven's demand and reconciles humanity to God. That work requires vigorous warfare and earnest struggle to overcome corrupt and sinful habits and fight the fight of faith, with the saved working with Christ, taking up His yoke, and helping others grasp by living faith the righteousness found in Christ. Such faith rules out sharp dealing, hardness of heart, lack of sympathy, coarse speech, suspicion, accusation, pomposity and self-esteem, overbearing pride, and harsh censure and condemnation, while truth appropriated by faith into the inmost heart is given living power by the Holy Spirit to make a new creature strong to resist temptation, deny self, make self-sacrifice, and practice known truth.
This faith comes by listening to God speaking through His word, taking instruction from the source of all light, receiving the Holy Spirit's teaching, and hearing and receiving truth because it is truth. It is learned through daily heart work and great work accomplished daily in the human heart by study of the Word with earnest prayer, bringing decided advancement in spiritual understanding and constituting Christian character and experience. It is not mere theory or assent but truth appropriated, inwrought into the heart, and practiced in life through learning and obeying Christ's lessons, increased and cultivated as heart religion with humble contrite heart, daily conversion, daily grace, and revival putting away self and self-sufficiency that blocks the Spirit. All spiritual sinew and muscle in those who have it are nourished by eating the Bread of Life, enabling reliance on promises rather than sight or feeling, showing the Spirit's fruits, transforming into Christ's image, and sharing received truth so a worker can represent truth with power instead of dull listlessness.
When God's Word is received into mind, soul, heart, and life it produces this working faith, consecration, devotion, and sanctification of body, soul, and spirit, uniting converts with Christ in God. So received and made part of life, it acts upon truth, opens the heart to heaven's blessing, cuts away inherited tendencies to evil and wrong traits strengthened by habit, changes habits and customs to conform to Christ, and leads to regarding God's commands as unabolished unchangeable truth necessary for keeping the law's great principles. Without it even clearly presented truth and a glorious message of hope cannot transform the heart or please God, and without it the ministry of the Word in preaching and reading does nothing for the receiver, while with it reading, feeding upon, and practicing truth gives power to glorify God.
It must be had every day through the deep working of God's Spirit, exercised daily, hourly, and moment by moment, cultivated and brought into exercise as a daily working power with implicit trust in order to grow. It emanates from God, admits no thread of selfishness, is just such firm-textured love as Christ revealed from a subdued will, and cannot be possessed until self dies so Christ can live within. So cultivated it purifies the soul, makes every step a step of faith, love, and consecration walking in the light with Christ's companionship, while merely professing truth without living it in continual faith and obedience leaves superficial reception with bitterness ready to return under temptation, and harboring unbelief and neglecting Christ's love leaves one groping in darkness. Strong faith thus cultivated is needed to stand the perils of the last days.
It is gained by making thorough work in seeking God and overcoming, making the Word the counselor, and walking carefully every moment close beside Christ. Entering its purifying process, not always pleasant, calls for lifting the soul to God in prayer, refusing to fail or be discouraged, pressing through thick darkness to light beyond mist and cloud where the divine presence dwells, falling into God's hands to be dealt with by Him rather than man's, and trusting humbly as a little child, so that believers both live the gospel and teach it and live in harmony urging others to obey. To abide in it is to put aside feeling and selfish desires, walk humbly, appropriate promises for every occasion, rely entirely on God's faithfulness to sanctify character and make all things possible, with the Spirit's special fruits seen in life.
Only God brings a person to real faith by leading recognition of His mercy, love, and forbearance, for it is God's gift opening the heart to receive the Word as leaves of the tree of life and filling the heart with His love so obedience to truth cleanses. Believing in Christ and receiving transforming grace is definite work reflecting Christ's virtues in mind and character, tasting that the Lord is good, taking Jesus as the portion forever, and resting on the cross where love and justice meet. Sinners must repent and come as they are trusting Him alone to make pure and keep holy and obedient, with transformation accomplished by the Only Begotten's sacrifice reconciling the fallen by His blood, sought with humility for grace and wisdom rather than self-confidence, and Jesus Himself imparting it in answer to earnest prayer. It is received by turning from beholding others' defects, since dwelling on the objectionable changes one into the same image under Satan's control, and means having Christ's mind with God's love shed abroad creating desire to live for God as Christ in Gethsemane was sustained by pleasing the Father.
Abel revealed this trust when he offered sacrifice relying on the Redeemer as the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, and God witnessed his righteousness by accepting it with fire from heaven consuming it. Abrahamic faith of this kind costs something, purifies the soul, and leads to implicit faith and willing obedience. It calls for deeper confidence, softened subdued heart, and cooperation doing one's best with means Christ supplies, and is shown in visible acts of love, gratitude, and devotion as Mary's service expressing recognition of His worth was a lesson the disciples needed. This faith comes as grace is received, and the Holy Spirit makes the things of God a living power in an obedient heart. Genuine faith looks to the uplifted Christ and takes hold of divine power, so Christ in the heart leads to loving words and efforts to bind others to Him.
Faith Applied in Life
In the Christian home this faith stands at the helm presiding over the entire household, keeping self from asserting itself, forming right and correct habits, and producing kind, courteous, polite conduct with careful recognition of the rights of others and the principle of brotherhood. Where this faith rules the will of God bears sway, angels visit, and the home becomes a place of refreshing to worn, weary pilgrims. Its good influence reaches far to other families who mark the results, follow the example, and guard their homes against satanic influences, so that brotherhood is more widely recognized and obeyed. That faith is shown by good example, by power received from Christ, by improvement in every habit and practice, and by conformity to the character of Christ, making character true and undefiled and turning the natural bent of thoughts and feelings heavenward. Parents are to represent this faith as they educate their children tenderly and kindly, and when Christian parents cherish it everything is gained, for children are imbued with the spirit of God-fearing parents and a light shines forth in the home extending to others like heavenly radiance from the throne amid moral darkness.
For those who teach children this faith is a daily working power that keeps one's own spirit under the discipline of Jesus Christ, putting away sharp words, continual censure, impatience and harshness. Instead it shows pity and sympathy, patiently and kindly and in love leading children step by step up the ladder of progress. When Christ is formed within as the hope of glory, truth acts on the natural temperament with transforming power, subduing self so old fretful, critical, impatient traits pass away and a changed Christlike character appears, proving God's authority real and not merely in name and proving Christ's grace sufficient at all times and in all places. An unsanctified, selfish, impatient, un-Christlike temper must not turn truth into a lie before pupils, and this requires separation from everything objectionable and unchristlike and making God's will the highest authority. Love for children alone is not enough but must be joined to active cleansing faith, for where that faith is missing parents remain like grown-up children, are not wise teachers, and do not feel their responsibility, which marks the wrong kind of education. Parents themselves are in training to be good teachers and living lesson books, guarding truthfulness in smallest matters and being by precept and example exactly what they wish their children to be after Christ the Pattern, refusing indulgence that lets selfish appetite become a tyrant.
Christian workers need this active, loving, purifying faith together with ability to give a reason for what they believe and training in principles of healthful living for ministering to suffering humanity. Schools that send forth such workers are of great value, especially when placed near health institutions so school and sanitarium help and strengthen each other and students are educated for service. Physicians, ministers, and canvassers need to cultivate this faith to gain a better understanding of true medical missionary work, to serve patients rightly, to bring consolation, and to show Christ's Sermon on the Mount in daily life. This work must commence in their own hearts as part of preparing a people to stand in the great day of the Lord. Genuine faith is active and not mere profession or outward religious status, purifying from moral defilement and enabling resolute effort and self-sacrifice, with love that is healthful rather than sentimental equipping for difficult work especially in saving souls.
This faith belongs in business and every other enterprise, joining people to Christ in humble diligent service so efforts bear fruit in God's work and saving souls. Pure strong faith in what the Lord has said must have a leading part in all business enterprises and mark every transaction if spiritual life is to stay alive, for without it all connected with the work stand on losing ground. When men are accepted as laborers together with God to save perishing souls, He works with them and joins them to Christ, from whom they draw nourishment to carry out His plans and bear much fruit. The verse calls for walking humbly with God, seeking Him diligently, serving earnestly, trusting fully, honoring His work as sacred and His power to carry it forward, lest they prove unprofitable servants left in darkness and doubt instead of looking to Christ for light of life, strength, uplift, freedom from gloom, change into His image, joy in His love, and willing service in return. In probationary time when all are on test and trial this faith is proved by acquiring money only as God directs and using His goods with an eye single to His glory to bless self in order to bless others rather than grasping wages or goods for self, and by believing the Word, remaining faithful, true and steadfast to principle, doing missionary work with Christ's spirit, and avoiding defilement of faith and practice by dishonest practices or speculation for selfish gain.
God's organized servants on earth to represent truth must in zeal for righteousness reveal a faith that works by love and purifies from every slothful habit, expressed in watchfulness unto prayer, humble heart-searching, and readiness to examine self to detect defects of character and avoid self-exaltation. This faith and zeal are essential so labor for the perishing does not weaken and Christ is not disappointed in His church. Shepherds of the flock must know this truth that faith works through love and purifies, with acceptance of God's Word and obedience to His commandments belonging to it, for when ignorant of it they become self-indulgent, turn God-given powers to their own interests, and the flock is destroyed for want of being fed and strengthened, while churches under such shepherds become backslidden. When leaders lack this living faith and spiritual discernment, unbelief and counterworking hinder work that could have advanced.
Living faith works by love in holy union with God, and God wants His people so joined exercising this faith as a united, active, adaptable working body in His service. It keeps believers from growing weary in doing good, following Christ who though often wearied, taxed to the uttermost and physically exhausted kept traveling on foot to heal all who came and teach the way of eternal life, making every sacrifice possible so light and truth might shine because a world was to be saved. God promises power to win a glorious victory to those who so work. The work of faith under all circumstances lifts the head in conscious dignity and firm trust, revealing surpassing beauty and glory even in youthful self-denial and self-sacrifice in following where Christ leads, lifting His cross and bearing it on the path cast up for the ransomed to the Father's home. Such a consecrated worker lives among eternal realities, binds himself to God's Word with truth wrapped like a belt, and these are the laborers God needs for reaching souls.
This faith turns sluggish neglect and sluggish movements into consecrated activity for others' salvation, showing by words and works a personal burden for perishing souls starving for the bread of life, made one's own with Christlike consistency. Where that burden has been met with indifference it calls for repentance. Christians need clear conviction of duty and childlike faith to cure listlessness, indifference and carelessness toward souls perishing in sin. That faith removes the deathlike stupor resting on the church, lets the Lord work upon mind and heart, purifies the soul-temple, and gives spiritual elasticity and vigorous growth.
Influence and success in Christian work come not from costly, large expensive buildings, rich furnishings or furniture, tables provided with delicacies, or display, but from grace surrounding the believer and the Holy Spirit working upon mind and heart. This makes the believer a savor of life unto life so God can bless the work. It binds workers by common sympathy and pure affection with love and respect as a telling influence and representation of practical godliness, symbolizing the pure holy family of saints above, unlike unbelief which is cold, repulsive, dark, forbidding, only denying and destroying. When so lived the Word becomes assurance and convinces others by reason that truth taught is reality and not cunningly devised fables or imaginative religion merely inspiring enthusiasm. This living faith is expressed in enduring trials for truth, relieving needs of fellow men, helping those in need, caring for physical and spiritual needs to turn people to God, and unselfish service revealing God's love and Christ's grace, and God's promise of all sufficiency for every good work is made to all who reveal it.
This faith is the proof of conversion and being born again, showing the old life of selfishness has died and new life in Christ is revealed in character. It is tested by word, practice, disposition, fragrant influence and daily association, showing whether one loves God with whole heart, soul, mind and strength, has entered Christ's fold, has lamps trimmed and burning, is laid as sure foundation on the solid Rock for labor with God, and has made calling and election sure. Only sincere faith secures entrance into the city of God, expressing itself in love for God and brethren, making a person a power in world and church as the sign of Christianity and witness of childhood to God. This true faith recovers the backslider from worldly entanglements and holds him in daily service that also keeps brethren from backsliding, which is the work required of every soul, and even one who lost liberty once enjoyed in Christ can recover it by looking to Jesus and again revealing this loving purifying faith. Genuine conversion gives this faith uniting hearts in faith and love, holding fast confidence in Christ as only hope, joining human weakness to God's strength, ignorance to His wisdom, unworthiness to His merits, poverty to His boundless riches and helplessness to His enduring might, giving ever-increasing strength, growing faith and strength in hope.
The faith that counts is a working efficiency, active and practical rather than mere belief. Its work is to demonstrate the value of health reform principles including diet and healthful living, to make them known to the world, and to give instruction in the churches in healthful living. Such practical demonstration gives wider influence.
Faith Completes Christian Character
Faith which works by love reforms character and shapes believers after the divine likeness, while grace beautifies, ennobles and sanctifies, refining speech, conduct, habits and deportment to prepare for the company of angels, giving an experience more valuable than gold or silver or precious stones with the Holy Spirit working in obedient children who become partakers of the divine nature, think God's thoughts, have perceptions sanctified, and work in Christ's lines in kindness, thoughtfulness, mercy and love that helps and does not discourage. It produces good fruit, Christlike attributes, integrity, uprightness, benevolence, universal humility and Christ's virtues, requires surrender of the entire will, brings daily sanctification, supports growth toward perfection with Christ as righteousness and example, and enables following in His footsteps by dependence on His merits and promised power and continued growth toward maturity. It transforms character into a testimony of indwelling love, overcoming evil habits and inherited and cultivated wrong traits, abandoning besetting sins and purging wrong feelings, which no human can do for self or another because it is Christ's work for the surrendered, with conversion as the greatest miracle through belief as personal Saviour with actual results, purified by obedience, sanctified by perfect observance of the Sabbath, trusting, waiting and working out salvation while God works within.
True living faith is borne naturally as grapes on the vine by one loving God, holding Christ as stronghold, living God's law as Christ did, and cherishing His love; beholding His beauty, excellence, sacrifice and infinite cost softens, humbles, fills with thanksgiving, awakens longing and desire to witness, places affections on Him, brings understanding under the Spirit's control, shapes character in divine likeness, and is seen in unselfish merciful words and deeds shaped by the Spirit. Christ's self-denial and sacrifice lived out daily develops this faith which brings sanctification, and no one can possess it without first learning self-sacrifice, self-denial and benevolence; wholehearted faith active in self-denial must match light received and fits for immortal life, while lawful striving is putting on Christ and hiding self behind Him in meekness and lowliness seen as kindness, courtesy, pity, compassion and sympathy without sourness or self-exaltation. Genuine faith is seen in practical life with purifying refining influence, not careless rough family words nor untidy dress but neat, orderly, cleanly conduct as valuable in the Lord's sight; thinking himself on display before world, angels and men, his words and thoughts must be untainted and mind undefiled, getting ready for society with heavenly angels, made visible in words, dress, spirit and conduct, making Christianity practical in everyday conduct, speech, relationships and responses to irritation.
The verse describes justifying faith as practical, running through words and deeds in self-denying service that helps others, while inactive religion has no value; true justification by faith is never one-sided and never ignores works, but faith uniting to Christ stirs to constant labor of love and warfare against corrupt habits, proved by works, for good works do not pay for redemption but are its fruit in loving obedience, speaking and acting in the light, holding promises, seeking His will, overcoming selfishness and serving others in unity and courtesy at home and everywhere. God accepts only this faith; depending on personal merit and confidence in own knowledge is faith without works which God does not accept, no profession takes the place of honesty and fidelity, entrusted capabilities of mind, intellect, affections, conscience, knowledge and virtue must be constantly improved and used for God's glory to hold supremacy, shown by diligent service and trading diligently with entrusted means to win souls instead of fearfully holding back like the one-talent servant. The self-righteousness of the Jewish nation lacked this purifying faith, warning hearers not to resist its light; lacking it they did not open hearts to the Spirit, sympathize with Christ's purpose, or see Him as antitype of offerings, so fell under doom and lost deliverance; where it is absent there is no repentance or Spirit, and outward ceremonies, fasting and lamentation are only show while unjust, selfish and oppressive traits are retained and grace is not visited.
This faith barricades the soul from every assault of the enemy and belongs to those wholly transformed to the likeness of Father and Son, learning to love God with all affections and powers through discipline of harmonious association; those insisting on remaining apart must pass through entire change or never see the kingdom, for merely outward response will not stand in trial but leads to thorough repentance and obedience. In present test and trial this faith must be strengthened, and believing families strengthen it by praying under inspiration, speaking wisdom from Scripture, speaking courage, and closing lips against accusation; in the solemn time when signs testify the end is nearer, many do not show it, and it is needed alongside cleansing to turn from self and be ready for Christ's soon coming, in preparation for the latter rain seen in changed words that bind together, producing unity and overcoming as Christ overcame. Healing the sick requires this faith; in sickness it turns attention from suffering to Jesus the loving Healer and brings contact supporting recovery of soul and body, and the faith needed for healing ministry works by love as workers minister to physical and spiritual needs, for outward status does not make effective.
Fathers and mothers must receive it by humbling hearts, overcoming defects, reforming character, talking less and praying much, and taking heed to doctrine; without it they are not ready for the Lord's coming and cannot do justice to children, while with it the inner lamp burns in faithful work for their children, to be sought earnestly as deficiencies are recognized by those united to Christ to do gospel work and reveal Jesus' love in living in Christ. Faith and love are essential to living experience; without faith it is impossible to please God, mere profession is not enough, harboring unbelief and neglecting to cherish Jesus' love is the greatest danger leaving one to grope in darkness, and this faith holds no doubt that God fulfills promises before sight comes, to be encouraged when unbelief and opposition arise by staying the mind on the Lord. It means walking by faith not sight, stepping into allotted duty, watching unto prayer, working with expectation in the short time left; it is daily trust in One who knows every weakness and was tempted as humans are, looking to Him as Author and Finisher, praising instead of murmuring, and abiding in trust, steady and active especially when weary and tempted to distrust, fighting the good fight by seeking the Lord.
Working faith believes Christ is propitiation and has brought immortality to light, works actively with every energy like a farmer expecting harvest, claims promised strength rejoicing God will perform it, breaks the hard heart upon Christ so He fills and molds by His Spirit, and enables overcoming as He overcame to sit with Him on His throne, giving strength under difficulty by the eye fixed on the Pattern, learned with contrition, bringing rest and peace, making overcomers who obey principles and receive promised joy. Christ gives this faith to those who stop sinning and return to Him, imparts it to those who repent and seek pardon through His merits for cleansing and sanctification through obedience, and the consciousness of trying to obey brings health to soul, mind, and body; it is given to helpless souls cast on Christ who believe His merits and appreciate Him, bringing everlasting life measuring with God's life. When humbled by Christ's loving service the disciples' hearts went out in deep earnest faith that works by love; fellowship with Christ strengthens faith and makes love visible in kindness, and talking and acting in faith secured by earnest prayer and faithful practice reveals it, for safety lies not in professing truth but living it.
True faith hangs on Omnipotence and hides in Jesus, ever learning and growing, and with it God does more in a moment than human labor in a lifetime; living faith turns from self and human help to Jesus as intercessor, then works by love hating sin, stamping the divine image, and bringing Jesus to possess the soul, not remaining hidden but continually cleansing from moral impurity as God's gift, meeting present needs with present help for daily battles rather than merely stirring emotion. This faith draws daily from the source of power and concentrates heavenly influence on perishing souls, and if held together would charge dormant powers with new life and fill the world with light; everything in the Christian life depends on possessing it, and perfect tested faith makes its possessor perfect, loyal amid hardness without seeking human praise. It is learned from Jesus by taking His yoke and learning meekness, revealing His character and giving rest, peace, and joy; meekness and humility are means God uses to make His people pure and holy, learned by sharing Christ's suffering and bearing His yoke, with truth taking root and shown in spirit and words.
It means learned dependence belonging to converted people who feel need of wisdom, know they are sinful, and learn in Christ's school; only with it are men prepared to mold other minds without laying grievous burdens, and depending on God in it leads to govern self under God's rule rather than impose restrictions on others. This faith must be exercised because it sanctifies; unbelief makes the Lord ashamed while sloth accomplishes nothing, and God sometimes permits entanglements to stir faculties so He may honor faith with blessings; believers are to exercise it rather than give way to unbelief or despondency, making every step of faith, love, and consecration, looking to Jesus as author and finisher, making God strength to keep from temptation and give courage to live principles. This faith awakens when sinners recognize sin's seriousness and cost of sacrifice, filling them with love and gratitude leading to humility, repentance, and desire to stop transgressing rather than continue in sin; a kind sympathetic spirit toward the perishing is its fruit, leading others to repentance as the Spirit convicts without force.
Faith working by love to God and man must be kept alive by what is eaten and breathed: eating the Word as prescribed by Christ the Physician and breathing pure atmosphere by associating with meek followers, while associating with evil means breathing malaria of sin which harms it; it comes by taking sacred truth with clear perception, while overeating beclouds mind so truth cannot be taken in, and receiving truth deeply nourishes and sanctifies. Genuine faith requires loving truth in all its principles and living it in obedience; assent without loving obedient life strips truth of power, and truth loses brightness when not joined with growing love and practiced faith but must be put to practical use in a humble contrite heart, shaping leaders' words and influence toward consecration. Faith is not merely belief or feeling but trust putting promises into practice and producing the Spirit's fruits; it is connected with knowledge of truth, and continuing to trust brings blessings in every need, with larger faith to be cultivated and grounded so none are moved from hope of the gospel, growing by adding virtues through grace and diligence.
The faith of the verse is the faith delivered to the saints distinguishing truth from error, given by the Spirit's inspiration as impelling power molding character above mere formal actions, rooted in truth implanted in the heart tended by grace, and possessed by those rooted and grounded in truth, growing as truth takes root. It comes from God and works through the love Christ revealed; as self dies and Christ lives within it purifies as part of sanctification requiring daily trust and the Spirit's control, and cannot be possessed until self dies so Christ can live within, firm in texture admitting no selfishness, working in the heart bringing all into subjection as abiding principle. Faith in Christ enables discerning God and makes partakers of divine nature escaping corruption; it receives and practices truth bringing out of error into light, gives wisdom from heaven, and everyone who loves knows God, with contrition and love opening the way.
Such faith springs from deep heart-love for Christ as Master supplying motives, coming through affection into faith and unselfish interest in brethren; it quenches desire to be first, leaves no hatred, refreshes spiritual life, and produces loyalty, prayer, zeal, principle, devotion to what is pure, and companionableness, of value with God and growing like Him by continued trust, stirred when sluggish souls are roused to love Jesus fully, producing mutual love that impresses faith on others with forgetting behind and supplication mingled with gratitude and joy. This faith receives life from Christ the Life-giver and is seen in fruits empowered by the Spirit; it leads to sharing divine nature, spiritual health, growth in righteousness, Christ dwelling in the heart, and the Spirit's presence seen in growth, to deeper experience revealing Christ's character unto highest perfection so Christ as Redeemer and owner is glorified as helping hand. The faith that avails responds to Christ's drawing and joins in vital contact expressing supreme preference, reliance, and consecration, like the suffering woman whose touch of need received healing virtue while the crowd received nothing; it places rightly before God, enables seeking first the kingdom, resists temptation, and openly acknowledges Christ, producing humility, patience, obedience and sanctifying truth controlling life and speech with kindness instead of harsh censure.
That trust calls for deeper confidence, softened heart, and cooperation doing one's best with means Christ supplies; all Christ's teachings require this deeper trust, and it is the same faith by which Abel obtained witness, offering relying on the Redeemer in the Lamb slain from the foundation, accepted by fire from heaven. This faith purifies the soul of the educator, is shown in changed character treating others with compassion and freedom from carnality and bondage, and is genuine reliance advancing without going backward, depending on God not self and cherishing no unbelief, proved by actions on the naked Word, cleansing from selfishness; mere right ideas or occasional kindness while self remains strong misrepresents Christ when plans are crossed. Genuine faith distinguishes sacred from common and cleanses of self-interest and submission to arbitrary human demands; it appears in spirit, words, actions, and daily doing of Christ's will, rendering life pleasing to Him who purchased human powers, while all have some faith but only this quality counts.
With submission to God and sanctification by truth it guards against presumption that prosperity can awaken; those keeping undefiled and living lofty principles exemplify it, and those trusting self instead of the Lord do not enjoy it or its blessing, needing it to enlarge intellect, keep pure, live heaven's principles and be fitted for the city. Those surrendered reveal it by making the Word counselor, realizing weakness, letting truth sway life, living by courage assured grace subdues impulse, and standing when the Spirit lifts a standard against the enemy; it is revealed in a life governed by the Word under angelic guardianship bringing harmony, ever prayerful as truth bears sway. Living faith needed to withstand deception represents Christ by obedience and loving service, protects against delusions, and is not cold or overbearing but shares light; it brings new life and close relationship, working by love as fruit the Father produces when pruning fruitful branches, with direct testimony of grace from the living Saviour.
The church has this faith when each begins with his own heart, humbles himself, yields to the Spirit and yokes with Christ, producing unity, sweet harmony, growth as holy temple, and hand-to-hand work in building waste places; it comes by beginning with self, humbling before God, and yielding to the creating power, cultivating it to bring purity in families and churches. Living by it means not complaining but talking faith, hope, and courage, bringing sunshine, doing one's part while receiving help; it is living trust grasping promises in an honoring life, leading to obedience and faithful service, not mere name or half experience. True faith is more than belief, involving submission of will, yielding of heart, fixing affections on God, and renewal in His image from one not subject to law to one delighting in precepts, so righteousness of the law is fulfilled in those walking according to the Spirit, giving moral power to obey and turn from transgression.
Genuine faith cleanses from all selfishness so the soul is perfected in love; having found grace through Christ's blood it makes tender and merciful, trains the mind to exercise faith instead of doubt and jealousy, refuses to treat obstacles as impossibilities, and presses on ungoverned by circumstances, trusting promises and cherishing grace as the only approach, unlike Israel's checkered history under the cloud. In laborers it is evident in a life that purifies the soul; for ministers genuine belief is made evident by this loving purifying faith, without transformed heart work is powerless, and practical godliness reveals whether service reflects Christ in rest, care, and Christlike works with His Spirit dwelling within. True faith purifies from every slothful habit with zeal in watchfulness, heart-searching, self-examination, and avoidance of self-exaltation; confession does not earn favor and there is no virtue in confessing to humans apart from it, while Christ's love subdues propensities and faith lives by coming daily with troubles finding rest in His yoke, filled by the Spirit until every thought is subjected.
Only sincere living faith secures entrance into the city of God, expressing itself in love for God and brethren and making a person a power in church and world as sign of Christianity; only it gives fitness for immortal life, and God waits to see it in His workers, recovering the backslider and holding in daily service that keeps brethren from backsliding, recoverable by looking to Jesus. This faith is what makes ministry of the Word of any value to the hearer; without it preaching does nothing, while with it reading, feeding upon, and practicing truth gives power to glorify God and opens the heart to blessing, acting on truth to keep law's principles, necessary to please God, for handling truth alone does not sanctify and theory alone leaves unprepared. Rigid obedience without contrition or love cannot bring harmony with God; such faith transforms character, and faith not sustained by works is dead while living connection is proved by deeds, for only love expressed in works counts, talents are examined, the life and power of God appear only with it, and saying believe only while refusing commands is presumption not trust.
There is altogether too little of this living faith and entire dependence, and it is urgently needed with the will in entire obedience; the church lacks genuine faith and love making experience imperfect, and while filled with self-admiration it cannot be understood nor Scriptures understood, belonging with union, Christ abiding within and wise decisions. Those who deeply feel need of God and wisdom believe with this working faith; it is directed to God and others in compassionate action, and faith must be joined with love and put into practice, for merely hearing of God's help does no good unless lived out in loving action, refining through the Spirit and uniting God's people. The verse teaches truth works through love in a Spirit-led life growing in character, showing tender pity, and receiving mercy in reproof; the truth it describes transforms every faculty to obey, lets peace rule, and lets life shine openly, while its absence shows in vanity, display and misuse of means laying up little treasure.
When received, truth drives out selfish purposes and prepares for growth; those receiving with honest hearts bear fruit to God's glory, and the higher education God calls all to is truth in the heart purifying the soul, overcoming perverted ideas and sanctifying life. Those connected with God's service must be cleansed from selfishness, do all to God's glory, practice justice, and seek order, for only then will works bear judgment; each must cultivate it by surrender to be purified and sanctified through truth lived out in loving one another, kept untarnished, with trust cultivated especially where unbelief weakens. This faith leads to unity with God rather than discontent, with closer communion, rest, and peace depending on Christ's grace; it makes receivers doers with Christ's mission vivid, while apathy reveals disobedience and cold hearts, without sanctifying influence pointing wrong like guideposts.
This faith is to be cherished by workers, especially those with greater responsibility who must cherish His love and depend on Him; it fills the true worker who takes the Bible to warn the world as God's helping hand, ennobling him so submission removes drudgery, showing Christ's abiding presence and love flowing daily to the perishing. When accepted as laborers together with God He works with them and joins them to Christ to draw nourishment, carry out plans, and bear much fruit; this faith leads people to serve those in darkness rather than pursue own interests, growing fit for service, pure strong faith marking every business transaction, walking humbly, seeking diligently, serving earnestly and trusting fully. This faith brings mind, soul, body, thoughts, and will into submission to Christ and conformity with God's will, enabling bearing His cross; it is holy enabling generosity, self-sacrifice, and active service, purifying and leading to active service rather than valuing outward status.
Those who believe receive eternal life and show faith in integrity and seeking God's glory; together with joy of salvation it qualifies to guide sinners to repentance, for merely agreeing without practicing is not enough, but believing and practicing truthfully in thought, word and deed. Confessing sin and living as example help others cherish it; genuine faith is shown in confessing sin, helping others confess, and pressing toward higher attainments, producing fruits of repentance including restitution as far as power extends. A superficial reception leaves bitterness ready to return under temptation; falling into temptation results from failing to make God one's strength and lacking this faith, while this faith makes God one's strength and keeps from falling, giving grace and courage to live law's principles, to be exercised daily and cultivated.
Faith active through love is needed for victory over evil and works with converting power to cleanse; living faith, not ordinary experience, gives ground to stand firm and provides evidence of reformation, not depending on outward standing. Those with Christ dwelling by faith seek to bring wills into harmony with God and love believers, making them life-giving influence; the Lord's covenant of peace embraces all who receive, believe, and exercise active faith through love. True faith belongs to those one with Christ having His mind and working His works, changed by beholding Him, emptied of self with the vacuum supplied by Christ's Spirit, with no self-confidence and Christ as all in all, enjoying spiritual things, cleansed from moral defilement; trusting wholly and abiding keeps inconsistencies from appearing, and when not preserved evil prevails.
Purifying faith grounds believers so as not to be moved from hope of the gospel, and this is everyone's privilege; being rooted in Bible faith gives confidence, while those not rooted are unsettled by unsafe examples, losing little faith into uncertainty, yet outward status counts nothing. Faith is expressed in holy practice, strengthens the soul, and is essential for running the race; it is shown by diligent service with entrusted abilities, for neglecting duty helps the enemy and works against Christ. In Jesus Christ trusting wholly and abiding keeps inconsistencies from appearing, and when not preserved evil prevails; the faith described cherishes truth that purifies, and faith in Christ made effective through love continually purifies from defilement, received as personal Saviour in cooperation with God, expressed in humble service, kindness, forbearance and self-denial.
Love working through the Spirit refines and sanctifies, and shared commitment to truth and love unites God's people; the truth works by love to God and sanctifies and purifies the soul. Without this faith all learning is deficient, it begins with reverence and is kept alive by prayer, communion, self-examination, and divine wisdom according to light; to exalt science above the God of science is ignorance while thinking to be wise, and love of truth gives reason for diligent study to do good and share Christ. The faith belongs to early piety to be taught to children in plain commands without superstition, lived in consistent action, and every young man may have it if he wills, cooperating with God in duties to body and soul and living for two worlds, refusing cheap mold, active in godliness and love, overcoming the world proved by works as distinct light-bearers, for friendship with the world is hostility to God.
The victory that overcomes the world is by this living active faith proved by works, making God's people though few stand distinct in pursuits and affections as light-bearers, because friendship with the world is hostility to God; it is the one gospel faith shared through the Spirit, giving strength under difficulty by the eye on the Pattern, bringing rest, learned with contrition, revealing character different from unbelievers. Steadfast faith in Christ as accepted Saviour makes precious work possible, and wholehearted example advances the cause bringing many to personal knowledge, with faith, love, and obedience dispelling darkness and helping the willing know truth; those knowing truth as in Jesus become missionaries, giving heart and standing under His banner, requiring pure heart and good conscience in supreme and neighbor love. In conversion accepting truth must purify and produce changed spirit shown in honest conduct and faithful handling of goods rather than continuing former habits; truth working by love requires conversion shown in changed character including faithfulness with what belongs to God, for dishonesty misrepresents Christ, while grace refines and elevates the mind under Christ's control.
Faith grows through exercise sustained by righteous works, evident when the heart is given in love and obedience, to be measured by transforming work according to light, enlarging intellect while purifying and sanctifying, enabling discernment and revealing God, cherished according to light, not inactive. This faith was unwelcome to those who would not forsake sin, so they used reasoning to blunt truth and excuse conduct; unbelief produces lack of it, and pleasing theories of the enemy develop into strange doctrines removing pillars and leading into error, shaking past experience and robbing power to discern place in history, resting only on the Word. Cultivating this faith by acting in faith transforms into the divine image with joy, and those who find believing hard must be treated with tenderness and prayer without discouraging words; this faith gives present help for immediate needs as vital truth brought home to the heart, appropriated inwardly by the Spirit to make new, strengthen will, deny self and practice truth, turning from self to Jesus and letting Him possess the soul.
Those who have it are divested of selfishness, bigotry, and pride, are meek imitators not making self the center, counting every penny precious to bless others, becoming living epistles prepared to meet the Saviour, revealed in self-denial and sacrifice, exalting Bible religion in clear light above controversy. When truth sanctifies, selfishness is driven out and the believer cooperates with the Spirit rather than accusing brethren, on which eternal interests depend; not all have this faith that purifies from dross through the Spirit overcoming partialities and lust, without which no fervent mutual love can be borne, but by enlightenment, endeavor, faith and prayer partaking divine nature escaped from corruption to love God and neighbor. This love cleanses of pride and removes idols, for outward activity alone does not prove religion; this faith belongs with pure religion from Christ, expressed by keeping truth in the heart and practicing it.
It is revealed in character shaped by the Spirit, in those loving as Christ loved, refusing strife, and treating one another with kindness; it is shown in deeds glorifying God, prompting relief of needs, and sanctifying the soul, bearing fruit instead of valuing ritual. It is learned by coming with contrition and educating the heart, in contrast to carnal faithless position robbing self and God; it is the living truth for the present time that calls for this faith, bringing peace with God. When the will is submitted, this faith brings growth in grace with fruits seen in life; this faith makes believers shine as lights, fills them with Christ's spirit to work in His lines, and means working out salvation while God works within, waging warfare against selfishness and corruption in earnest work for souls.
This living active faith preserves simplicity of trust; the blessing rests on meek and lowly people who have it, and faith is made complete by works with love for Jesus leading to God's work, cleansing by the Spirit, and unity, putting away old passions. This faith makes a person cleansed, sanctified, and fit for the Master's use, where self dies and Christ lives; Christ is the one who purifies everyone through this effective faith. A person may come just as they are, for this faith is not earned by first fasting or laboring, but works as Christ is taken to reign in the heart, and when believers fail He redeems them, to be met with praise, giving good hope to all.
Without this faith love for Christ does not grow and character is not transformed, handling sacred truth does not sanctify, and believing only as theory without daily heart-work leaves one treating the Word irreverently and unprepared for service, lacking the Spirit, closing eyes to light and in danger though handling sacred things. It is tested by changed character and daily conduct, with words, actions, disposition, and influence showing whether one is regenerated; genuine conversion changes both character and conduct in a life shaped by Christ shown by following His example in pure words and actions, demonstrated not merely claimed, sure and abiding, belonging to the renewed heart. God's grace attends this faith, Christ gives receivers power to become children of God and transforms character, showing power of His blood as Lamb who takes away sin; this world is a training school where it is learned, and exercising it here prepares for the higher grade above, living Christ's life to unite with the loyal, believed on His name.
It leads to deeper experience sharing divine nature and revealing Christ's character, and through it believers may reach the highest standard of perfection, moved to obedience and made Christlike so Christ as Redeemer and owner is glorified by service as His helping hand, exercising it as citizens of heaven by representing Christ, keeping commandments and having joy. Christ's example shows this faith in sympathy and forbearance, making each believer a transforming influence equipping to labor and share enlightening truths, and when it so works labors reflect Christ more fully, purifying and producing kindness, mercy, thoughtfulness and service. In the verse faith honors Christ by doing what He commanded, gives help in every emergency, and sustains trust through hardship so possessors are not forsaken; those who have it are happy and safe under God's power trusting Christ whose hands were pierced, purifying, calling to teachableness and right valuing of His work.
In the verse faith is to be talked and practiced, bringing standing in grace, enjoyment of salvation, and courage; ministers are to talk it and live truth in simplicity, presenting the Word as sin-destroyer, and working by love means loving as brethren with kindness and courtesy, made perfect by works and held even when others do not manifest it. In the verse faith calls for trust in God's righteous care greater than any human love, shown by giving His Son for eternal life; energized by love it learns sacrifice from the Father, and active faith calls for loving God supremely and others unselfishly with the whole being, opening heart to Jesus, melting harshness, breaking barriers, refining as fire, ruling speech with kindness and changing into same image. In the verse faith leads those who cherish it to seek help from Christ who is light and truth, and they receive when they ask; lacking it is the secret of unanswered prayer, and watching unto prayer requires this purifying faith, not cherishing pride or worldliness while praying for humility, needing simple confidence encouraged by prayer and teaching.
In the verse faith must be gathered into mind and soul without delay, kept by ceasing to sin, cultivating sobriety, staying in the channel where the divine current flows, coming in repentance and cooperating in salvation; Jesus will receive such, but can do nothing for one continuing in evil under Satan's inspiration, while obeying truth and being broken on the Rock is the response. In the verse physicians need this faith to serve patients and bring consolation and Christ as Saviour; those coming to sanitariums are to learn truth and receive it as workers minister to physical and spiritual needs, including helping the sick and learning to approach God through Christ's faith, showing Sermon on the Mount with self hidden, for outward status does not make effective. In the verse faith receives truth meekly and learns of Jesus belonging to the meek, and when even two or three gather they receive blessing not dependent on numbers; faith from a yielded heart is seen in a life shaped by Christ's principles, not treating truth as bondage nor complaining at obedience.
In the verse faith is seen in self-denial and sacrifice for truth, while seeking personal gain contradicts it; this active faith increases zeal, calls for keeping Christ the Pattern in view, and bringing Him into the home, fixing eyes on Him to control life into character without discord, clothed in righteousness and prepared for heaven, active and purifying rather than valuing status. In the verse the faith springing when the Spirit convicts operates through love subduing every unholy attribute and conforming body, soul, and spirit to Christ's image so God can use the believer, working from within outwardly and leading to communicate received truth, expressed in genuine conversion as self dies daily. In the verse without faith working by love nothing can be done; love expressed in brotherly care gives strength for salvation, and this work is not limited to ministers but believers can serve in different ways bringing people to Christ and resources for advancement, depending on love for God and others in harmony, doing all to relieve distress like the Samaritan.
In the verse faith is what must be sought, for God has not laid on man the duty of explaining Him, and without it no one can know what the kingdom is like or what is to be known of God as Creator, part of Christ's religion purifying and needing deeper grace. In the verse joined with heavenly power faith sanctifies and ennobles the whole person for service; it is the soul's grasp of truth sanctifying the soul and making a healthy church, in contrast to those never converted who take only form of godliness conforming to the world, while all accepting truth in heart live in loving communion. In the verse when God's and Jesus' love abide with experimental knowledge, one will not dwell on special ideas that leave unbelievers cold but will talk of Jesus' love; beholding Him reveals selfishness to be put away, melts harshness, breaks barriers, and changes into the same image, softening to plant truth, instead of claiming license to do as one pleases which brings bitter experience.
In the verse faith is cherished as workers receive, believe, and obey Christ's words in submission producing earnestness in house-to-house work and Bible readings; as people obey, the Spirit makes faith effective and fruit appears, expressed in daily conduct without disregarding conscience, producing effort and growth in grace. In the verse faith is received by bringing difficulties to God and seeking His will directly rather than looking to humans; it means believing Christ gave His life, trusting fully, doing given work while waiting for the Lord's unexpected coming, so as to inherit eternal life, coming with childlike trust on promises beyond sight, loving God and keeping commandments, taking virtues presented to the believing soul. In the verse living faith turns from self to Jesus as intercessor dying to save, then works by love; true belief as inner trust active in loving action cleanses openly, whereas dry speakers leave churches without vitality, but when Christ dwells within it is manifest, not hidden, bringing vital truth home to fortify daily walk.
In the verse Christian workers need this faith and training institutions sending forth such workers are of great value; true religion is consecration of a renewed heart, and saving faith shown by good works must endure testing and cooperate with God, continuing not drawing back, necessary to complete character and obey unto salvation, enabling service beyond rites. In the verse trust and love must be cultivated especially where unbelief weakens the church; those taking counsel from unconverted selves instead of trusting the Lord do not enjoy this faith or its blessing, trusting self and exalted wisdom instead, failing without divine standard. In the verse true believing is not pretense or tame assent but full earnest trusting faith in His merits to save each individually, laying hold as one's own Saviour; it is given to helpless souls cast upon Christ who believe in His merits and appreciate Him, bringing everlasting life, climbing up by Him and purifying.
In the verse genuine religion is not made by outward forms but by faith expressed in loving service with the Spirit dwelling in the heart; Christ requires this faith expressed by adorning truth in daily conduct, and even good actions are compromised when self is mingled. In the verse faith working by love is to be cherished by putting away unkind criticism and taking up Christ's work; present truth works by love leading onward and gathering the needy and oppressed, leading receivers to obey including the Sabbath into fellowship with Christ. In the verse right faith lives as seeing Him who is invisible, humbles self, and brings sound experience producing works of pure love in choosing good toward others, loving all for whom Christ died, so where present there is no strife for supremacy but mutual love and fruitfulness, seen in meekness free from envy and surmising, with compassionate seed bearing fruit.
In the verse faith as a soul prepared to serve exercises it and offers consecrated homage, and this inward moral fitness rather than outward requirements fits for the kingdom; those brought to know truth as it is in Jesus become missionaries, imbued with it to teach others. In the verse active faith equips believers to serve as fellow workers; living faith makes the consecrated worker mighty to conquer never giving up labor, living among eternal realities bound to the Word, and these are the laborers God needs, strong in the Lord, gentle and truth-wrapped. In the verse faith in Christ is not mere profession but is shown in applying truth personally and serving others; Christ gives believers faith shaping character after Christ whose words were governed by pure unselfish love, active and purifying.
In the verse Christ identifying with suffering humanity is the working of the love through which faith counts; the faith that counts stands opposite self-righteousness which the Jewish nation cherished to its loss, to be cherished by all knowing truth. In the verse faith is made possible by becoming acquainted with precious truth, so failing to seek it is cause for repentance; believers should seek purifying faith earnestly as they recognize deficiencies, for status counts nothing. In the verse genuine faith is shown in confessing sin and continually pressing higher; it must be cherished through watchfulness and prayer guarding natural affections so they do not draw away from God, for happiness is imperiled when neglected and God must be trust, not humans in His place.
In the verse the faith Christ requires is active faith energized by love, the fruit He looks for with patience and unity ripening in storm as well as sunshine; it is practical godliness strengthening the whole person and leaving no place for gloomy religion, complete in Christ, to be kept before people. In the verse faith expresses itself in works, so faith in the message leads people with means to risk giving to advance it, witnessing to unbelievers; in Christ it moves people to labor for bodily health and soul salvation sharing Christ's mission to do good and heal, imparting received blessings, relieving suffering even at cost, rescuing from deception in baptismal pledge, revealing God's merciful character in purity, mercy and compassion, for without such works faith is dead and alone. In the verse faith in Christ is to be cherished because it leads to correct faults and Christlike character; it calls for consecrated Christians whose lives are consistently like Christ's, not made effective by outward status but purifying.
In the verse true faith comes by taking in sacred truth with clear perception, while overeating beclouds the mind so truth cannot be taken in; receiving and believing truth deeply nourishes spiritual life and sanctifies the spirit. In the verse faith is to be used in prayer to lift up Christ before the people, while those receiving much magnify Him by giving much and revealing His fragrance; it is to be cherished, while hasty action can bring difficulties dishonoring God. In the verse living in Christ is having faith revealing Jesus' love; faith is practical, applies truth to one's own life, and leads to sharing truth and serving others with the Spirit working with willing humble workers, keeping love fresh by passing on knowledge, counting nothing of status.
In the verse true faith works openly requiring decided change so followers practice truth as Christ did and do whatever He commands; when present love appears and Jesus is glorified in every church, school, and sanitarium with Christ revealed in godliness, bringing every action into harmony with truth, for theory alone is not enough and without change conversion of the sick cannot come. In the verse the faith that could have purified would have led to living out truth in loving obedience and responsibility toward wife and children; living faith requires close connection with Jesus as Source of wisdom making strong men and women with joy, not merely holding unpopular truth but having nearness to God with every provision, for status without it counts nothing. In the verse true faith is steady and active through love to God, needed when weary and tempted to distrust, refusing distrust and fighting the good fight by seeking the Lord; faith is the test and proof of love for Christ, purifying.
In the verse true faith exalts Bible religion placing believers in clear light in a higher atmosphere, so doers do not seek controversy nor are tainted with bigotry; faith in Christ is living power leading to obey truth, while hope purifies as people behold His character, cleansing from idols. In the verse those not fully consecrated lack needed faith and Satan works through them unaware making crooked paths; gaining this working faith belongs to the converted born again whose character is transformed, opposite to bringing objectionable traits into ministry, proved by evidence to the world, for eagerness for temporal things with indolence for spiritual reveals defects explaining few conversions while true principles carry life-giving influence. In the verse genuine faith produces obedience, and that obedience is test and proof of being chosen, born of God, sharing divine nature, and being among the elect; genuine faith is demonstrated by pure upright life, sure and abiding, transforming the whole person, cleansing to produce obedience.
In the verse true faith must be sought from God by entire surrender and earnest prayer with spirit and understanding; in Christ's strength it brings converting power to transform, for Jesus' blood alone cleanses defilement, and by beholding Him the follower is changed without which heaven will be lost, cleansing and revealing His righteousness, for none atone for self, active not mere profession. Faith in Christ is not mere inward belief, with love of truth changing the heart and appearing in treatment of believers, not producing coldness or reliance on human authority but love in practical life; those believing with living faith are overcomers obeying principles running patiently for eternal life, receiving promised joy. The faith working by love is brought into God's service as genuine honest experience; those speaking fair words to the face while criticizing behind lack it and are deceived by selfishness, and fitness for deacon requires this working loving faith first proved in smaller duties, active and purifying.
God demands from those entrusted with large responsibilities a faithfulness keeping His work in harmony rather than carrying it on strangely; the verse applies to faith made active by the Spirit leading believers to venture into different kinds of work, living and active through love. Understanding this active faith depends on seeking God, and it leads to living in harmony with Him and urging others to obey; practical godliness should be kept before people along with this purifying faith. Truth works by love to purify with gentle rather than provoking power, so believers must not stir the temper of those not loving truth by unwise words, but let love control speech; living faith expressed in love makes the worker mighty living among eternal realities bound to the Word, with truth as belt, needed for souls.
Genuine faith is living, earnest, and determined; it overcomes hereditary wrong tendencies preventing growth of grace in others, and is learned by coming with contrition in contrast to carnal faithless position, bringing rest and peace, purifying evil tendencies that sap spirituality like parasites. It is given to those coming humbly aware of need and hungering for life, revealed through prayer and praise; servants justified by faith will be judged by works when the Lord reckons, and true faith purifies from defilement to become a temple, active through love. Those devoting themselves fully can receive saving grace and share it; this faith purifies and leads to whole trust in God as shield, and genuine conversion gives it uniting hearts, joining weakness to strength and poverty to riches with ever-increasing strength, holding confidence in Christ as only hope, for status counts nothing.
Christ implants truth and love, and this faith removes selfishness as living reliance for strength to overcome, not a quality possessed in oneself; this faith belongs to those determined to be obedient and goes with power to discern righteousness, revealing God, to be stood upon higher in schools. Its reality is proved by evidence shown to the world, and eagerness in temporal affairs contrasted with indolence in spiritual things reveals defects explaining few conversions, while those living true principles carry life-giving influence, entrusted with plain message and living close to Christ. It is a living principle leading to obedience, self-denial, and service, and this love is not mere impulse but acts through the will changing relations to God and others, growing into sincere sanctified love for believers, pure and uplifting seen in Christlike conduct not selfishness.
Union with Christ enables manifesting God's goodness, mercy, love, and truth in character; only faith operating through love and cleansing the inner life profits, bearing fruit and fitting to minister, while faith without fruit is false, displaying godliness outwardly, revealing Christ's likeness, for what is not lived cannot be taught. Genuine faith is the mark of pure spiritual life, coming only when the soul surrenders through Christ and is worked by the Spirit into communion, with Christ living in the meek, cleansing, bringing peace, and leading in self-denial. Ministers need this faith trusting the Lord will do what He promised; genuine active faith makes sin appear exceedingly sinful, shown by decided confession carrying out God's will, and understanding duty without doing it rejects light.
The great need is faith to purify from past transgressions, with God reading motives and calling for it; where present the converted stop accusing, see themselves needing purification, fall broken on the Rock, and humble themselves, no longer ascribing piety to self or aspiring to greatness, gathering obedience to the heart in love to God and man. Lack of it leaves powerless and unable to receive elevating truths, while possessing it gives the Lord's joy as strength, Christ abiding, light in the mind, and moves those near the end to cooperate with joyful language, giving vigor to mind and sight of invisible things, unselfish and necessary for every worker, not mere claim. Genuine faith is unselfish, not mere claim, necessary for every worker; needed faith cleanses by taking hold of promises with assurance, trusting God is interested, presenting needs, and believing He who gave heaven's best will not withhold eternal good, without wavering.
Faith working to Christ purifies moral defilement and gives privilege of overcoming every trait and representing Christ, possible for all converted through identification with the divine Son one with Him as He is one with the Father, continually receiving light, purity and faith from the Word to be presented faultless in His victory. This purifying faith is shown in caring for physical and spiritual needs, relieving fellow men, enduring trials, and unselfish service; the promise of sufficiency for every good work is made to those revealing it, surrounding with an atmosphere of grace, making a savor of life as the Spirit works, not coming from buildings or display, expressed in humble kindness and self-denial. The verse means faith acting through love unites to Christ so those joined are sustained by His life as branch by sap, do His works, represent Him in patience and love, bear fruit like His, and have Him as center and source of eternal life, purifying.
The faith is given through the Holy Spirit who works on mind and heart and awakens to service; living faith grasps divine power, and where preserved by abiding evil does not prevail, while loss lets evil prevail even in those striving for mastery, keeping character pure though tares grow with wheat, for profession alone does not purify and status does not produce it. Exercising it prepares a sanctified soul to serve with consecration of heart, intellect, and possessions, representing Christ by living it out and telling of His love, bringing every action into harmony with truth in humble soul-saving service, purifying, marking true workers earnest to save. God's servants need this faith beginning in their own hearts as part of preparing a people to stand in the great day; those entrusted must show faithfulness shaped by active love rather than ruling impulsively, and consecrated workers living among eternal realities become mighty, never giving up labor, bound to the Word.
This faith is daily trust looking to Him as Author and Finisher, praising instead of fault-finding; Christ gives it to those who stop sinning and return, and consciousness of obeying brings health to soul and mind, with sympathy for the tempted, to be cultivated in abiding confidence. Living faith means taking everything to the Lord in simplicity, laying self at Christ's feet, learning meekness in His school, handing temptations to Him at the cross to be molded into vessels unto honor ready for instruction, so coldness disappears and Christ becomes a well springing to eternal life, drinking river water, blessing others with enduring testimony, laying off self the greatest burden. True faith is not mere theory but truth appropriated and practiced by learning Christ's lessons, increased by heart religion, daily conversion, and putting away self-sufficiency that blocks the Spirit, so workers represent truth with power not dull listlessness, with ample grace for victory in changed life.
This living principle must be exercised in sanctified action using gifts, advancing from light to greater light as the Spirit shines; faith overcomes the world but does not come from merely hearing with pleasure, truth must be received into the heart with barriers removed, remaining in pure atmosphere doing His will, removing wrong habits and unsanctified words that make labor fruitless, for sentiments alone cannot save. Being rooted and grounded in sacred truth gives steadiness, while those not rooted are unsettled; faith grows as truth implanted is cared for by grace, taking root and grounding the person, giving confidence. Since none has attained perfection, purification must take place, after which lives show pressing toward the prize by walking obediently as children of the day; in all things faith must cleanse the soul in the great work God's people must do, holding heavenly things with earnest grasp, for lack of love brings reproof and burning love loves with pure heart.
Living in Christ, this faith makes Christianity practical shaping everyday conduct, speech, relationships, and responses to irritation; the love at work is shown in practical kindness especially to family without harsh words, and in conversion responding with prayer rather than hostility, recognizing struggles, loving one another, for status has no saving value. The vital essence is exercising faith to grasp the unseen and lay hold of power, proved by constantly improving all entrusted gifts of mind, conscience, and virtue to hold supremacy; saving faith produces humility, benevolence, and virtues revealed by working out salvation while God helps by the Spirit, keeping love for God and man, giving grace for grace imparted. This faith should bind believers together, and without it divisions dishonor Christ; true faith is sanctified faith received when Christ lives in the heart purifying from evil thinking and always loving, while its absence is shown by opposing brethren and striving for first place, but with it mutual duties are recognized, selfishness purified, and isolation ends.
This faith transforms character into testimony overcoming habits no human can overcome; it is revealed as Bible truths are accepted as rule of life grasped personally, making God's people peculiar and responsible to carry light to neglected fields, opening Word to darkness, preaching and confessing, with conversion's miracle and Sabbath sanctification. This faith is simplicity of godliness taking the Word as it reads, coming close to Jesus, and putting heart to work especially in the sick room; this faith belongs to those following God's will not their own, requiring faith and works in submission distrusting own judgment, laying aside controversy, sanctified by fear and obedience for true success. Genuine faith rests on trust in the Word and gives power to discern the present place in history, while loss comes from pleasing hostile theories growing into strange doctrines shaking past experience and removing pillars, unwelcome to those excusing sin by reasoning, producing unbelief.
Knowing truth and living in solemn time are not enough without living faith, which comes through Word and Spirit joined to receiving truth with love, becoming living reality in a transformed heart enabling personal testimony, given to those knowing truth as in Jesus with enlarged views, founded on understanding viewing the cross aright, cleansing imperfections, gained by searching and shunning unbelief. This faith works unselfish loyalty and care for others; true faith is wholehearted confidence given to Jesus with whole heart required of God's children, lying deeper than outward matters like dress and opposing self-indulgence, effective not by status, given with whole soul, mind and strength against self-love. Such faith works in life shown in works revealing grace through loving action; this is life received by receiving Jesus becoming inner motive transforming character as His love conquers body and spirit and brings fellowship with the hidden life in God, mastering other motives above the world by clinging in faith and prayer, accomplishing good in right relation as family members serving in light with humility.
In Christ is everlasting strength, and the believer holds profession without wavering, keeps the will on God's side under temptation even when faith seems contrary to sense, holding triumphantly hour by hour until transformed to Christ's likeness, quiet in God not worn by effort, surrendered, broken on the Rock, molded as clay into honor. Pride and self-sufficiency leave one without this faith and unfit to bless; genuine faith sanctifies while keeping individuality, and does not require working in another's conscience but in one's own as God molds the surrendered, sanctifying soul, body and spirit after divine likeness. This faith purifies and brings happiness and safety, and Christ's pierced hands show He gave Himself calling for teachableness; it delivers from corruptions enabling sharing of divine sympathies and loving fellowship with meek speech, active not valuing status.
This faith speaks and acts in the light, holds to promises, seeks to do His will, and those seeking Him will see salvation and Satan will have no power; good works do not pay for redemption, for they are fruit of faith active in loving obedience, working out likeness with unity and courtesy overcoming selfishness. This faith is stirred when sluggish souls are roused to love Jesus to utmost capacity, producing love for one another that impresses working faith on others, with forgetting things behind and supplication mingled with gratitude and joy, enabling undivided service with yearning for the Spirit and holy unction without which no effectual work is done. Those who receive truth with honest hearts bear fruit to God's glory; God's grace provides this faith in ample measure so victory over all sin can be obtained in a changed life, shown by continually improving, working with Christ with eyes on the Maker and Completer unto victory.
True faith is an active living principle shaping the whole life, interwoven in prayer, relying on promises to keep pure, obeying commands with determination to advance, as faith in Jesus who pardons and keeps, seen in caring for the needy, freeing the oppressed, and feeding the hungry, growing from faith to increased understanding as righteousness revealed from faith to faith, proved by enduring trial in unselfish works molded by love, for without it the heart lacks oil and treasure and meets disappointment. This working faith grows from faith to increased understanding as Christ's righteousness revealed from faith to faith, proved by enduring trial to help the needy in unselfish works from God's love molding the life, doing definite work as rough stones in God's workshop cleansed by ransom, improving continually. Such faith joined with Christlike spirit equips for service and demonstrates truth's power when error arises, with grace bringing conviction more deeply than reasoning; faith working by love means doing all to relieve distress as laborers together with God, needed by every child of God like the Samaritan treating the stranger as brother.
Believers are to live this holy faith as example, and those obeying reveal God; faith working by love lifts above prejudice, and close connection fills the heart to love as Christ loved, in pure unselfish atmosphere triumphing over color line like the good Samaritan when the Spirit is poured, with power to discern and determination to obey. True faith purifies from all deception and holds Christ's hand in dependence keeping from denying truth or grieving the Spirit; this faith is needed alongside healing of the sin-sick soul and cleansing of self-love and self-exaltation, holding to the All-sufficient, not bearing false witness. Merely hoping to love God or performing formal exercises does not prove it, while faith working by love brings trust, peace, hope, and daily renewal, grasps promises, and shows sympathy; genuine faith in a personal Saviour does definite work bringing rough stones into God's workshop to be cleansed, improving continually with eyes on Jesus, not creatable by effort but grown with Him.
The faith of the verse enables undivided service with yearning for the Spirit, carrying holy unction without which no effectual work is done; living working faith enables promoting God's glory, active through love and purifying. This faith is developed by studying Christ's character, practicing His virtues, and bringing His self-denial into daily life, changing into likeness of goodness and perfecting character as God wills, opposing evasion of cross-bearing, to be known above future knowledge for entrance, learned only by self-sacrifice and benevolence. Religious profession has no value unless faith is active working with the Spirit to purify tendencies and form humility; this faith is constant power from Christ conforming life shown in home life by improved habits making character true and undefiled, firm and good, growing heavenward by example.
This faith is had only by following where Christ leads, receiving light, refusing men's sayings, and living Christ's life; without it when called to trial one will yield, become transgressor, choose Satan's banner, and in judgment by works be found among transgressors, refusing complacency and sacrifice of favor. This faith is genuine reliance taking God at His word proved by actions, advancing without going backward, depending on God not self; eternal welfare is decided by real faith, while speculative faith is delusion fixing one in own ideas, cleansing from selfishness and never leading to false paths. The love shown in life reveals the heart, and faith is effective in practicing truth, doing good, and making alive in Christ; this faith is connected with knowledge of truth, and continuing to trust brings blessings, expressed by walking in truth worthy of calling.
Faith without works is dead, while faith from God works in the heart bringing all into subjection so self dies and Christ lives as abiding principle; controlling love steadies character against wavering, cherished as gold tried in fire leading to God, enlarging intellect while purifying and sanctifying, needed by young and aged rooted beyond pollution. This faith overcomes the world but does not come from merely hearing with pleasure; truth must be received remaining in pure atmosphere doing His will and removing barriers of wrong habits and unsanctified words, putting on Christ in meekness without sourness or worldly adulteration. This faith is expressed by following Christ in holiness, forbearance, tenderness, and love even when misjudged; those cherishing truth reveal its sanctifying power, and saving faith weaves Christ into life trusting Him today to overcome every defect, working for justification and sanctification with eye single, never doing evil for good, more than nominal admission like devils who trembled unsaved.
This faith is shown by giving God the heart, time, talents, and best efforts living for God rather than self; it must be perfected by steadfast love expecting self-denial and sacrifice rather than ease, keeping commandments though mocked, ready to give up friends, bear scorn and harm undiscouraged. Believers are to strengthen and live out this faith reflecting Christ's character as complete in Him; those with citizenship in heaven exercise it by representing Christ, keeping commandments, and having joy, cleansed from defilement with title to inheritance. This faith causes possessors to work God's works and unite instead of holding prejudice against medical missionary work to save souls, while opposers need conversion from prejudice to be used, purifying from emulation and strife.
This faith is necessary for each person to overcome as Christ overcame, producing true unity among those united to Christ; it is needed in preparation for the latter rain, seen in changed words binding together rather than faultfinding, purifying the heart. This faith purifies from emulation and strife and must be cherished to have love without dissimulation; happiness is imperiled when natural affections turn away from trusting God. This faith comes from the Holy Spirit, breaks stubborn hearts, and is source and power of sanctification through truth; after sin is cleansed it must possess the temple, entering after searching work brings humiliating discoveries, molding attributes after God's similitude, expressing love not status.
Those believing on Christ have faith purifying from every spot, sanctifying through belief of truth, leading to testify to the world and seek as Christ did to save every human being; faith effective rather than idle works changed life, while inactive faith does not produce reform needed for heaven, but truth refines changing from character to character. That faith moves people to care for those fallen under temptation, especially the neglected and endangered, and labor for rescue as Christ does; this faith guides sincere service to God, counting nothing of status. It makes believers trade diligently with entrusted means to win souls instead of fearfully holding money back like the one-talent servant; real faith is personal trust taking hold of promises, without which the battle is lost, but Christ understands every need and gives help, purifying through love.
This faith is active in practical godliness, unselfish service, and love; all accepting truth in the heart have it and live in loving communion with one another and God, counting nothing of status. The Word of life gives increasing knowledge supplying light, purity, and faith by which the soul is purified and believers prepared to be presented faultless; truly believing through understanding viewing the cross aright gives sure foundation purifying from imperfections, hereditary and cultivated. Such faith leading to unselfish lives is needed to receive arousing messages, make the Word the standard instead of human opinions, search Scriptures personally, and seek sanctification; it is the faith of those receiving Christ to whom power is given to become sons of God, purifying.
This faith calls believers to speak and live truth and love one another with kindness and courtesy; this faith is made visible in words, dress, spirit, and conduct, for mere profession counts for nothing when Christ is not abiding in the heart, active through love and purifying. The love of Jesus in the heart is of greatest worth enabling patience in pain and trust in every emergency; in training children love alone is not enough but must be joined to active cleansing faith, else parents remain as children, unwise and unfelt in responsibility, for faith is working through love. This faith must be cultivated; without it people grow away from Christ, and God demands from those entrusted with a message a faithfulness keeping His work in harmony, working by love and purifying rather than strangely.
In probationary time on test this faith is proved by acquiring money only as God directs and using His goods to bless others rather than grasping for self, and by believing the Word, remaining steadfast to principle, and doing missionary work with Christ's spirit, instead of defiling practice, expressed in faithful conduct. Doing God's will is the result of possessing this faith; this faith belongs in business joining believers to Christ in humble service so efforts bear fruit in saving souls, marking dealings, counting nothing of status, directing work to God. Only sincere living faith secures entrance into the city, expressing love in life and making a power in world and church as sign of Christianity; this faith recovers the backslider and holds him in daily service keeping brethren from backsliding, recoverable by looking to Jesus.
Faith not sustained by works is dead, while living connection is proved by deeds; faith in Christ makes partakers of divine nature escaping corruption, and receives and practices truth bringing out of error, producing Christlike character not false, yielding perfect obedience clothed in His righteousness, with only love in works counting. God accepts only this faith, while dependence on merit is faith without works He does not accept; this faith is what makes ministry of the Word of any value, without which preaching does nothing, but with receiving, acting and opening to blessing it transforms, necessary to please God. This faith is proof of conversion showing old life died and new life revealed; looking to Calvary creates active faith purifying from selfishness and ruling out harshness and pride, beginning struggle against corrupt habits, not excusing neglect but giving motive and power, tested by word, practice, disposition and association.
True faith takes God at His word, while merely assuming possession of truth is not this faith and such working purifying faith is very rare; believers are justified through merit not their own, but justification does not free to do wrong, bearing fruit in good works to sick, poor, fatherless, widows and destitute with Christ's character revealed. That faith is seen in following Christ's self-denial and obedience restoring the divine image through beneficence with convincing impression; influence comes not from buildings but from grace and the Spirit making a savor of life, purifying from selfishness, seen in sacrifice, convincing worldlings that law is love, while selfish gain contradicts it. Such faith purifies the heart and enlightens the mind freeing from sin and ignorance; it is to be sought to represent Christ's character and stands opposed to even small sins because they impair moral sense and leave scars, polluting mind and extinguishing Spirit though forgiven.
Such faith is active daily in good deeds in family and neighborhood caring for the poor and using means for God's work; faith is expressed in daily conduct receiving, believing, and obeying Christ's words with the Spirit's fruits seen in house-to-house work, comforting widows and orphans, keeping unspotted, not leaving works to others nor disregarding conscience. This faith is rooted in truth implanted tended by grace; Christian workers need it with ability to give reason and training in healthful living, and schools sending forth such workers are of great value, especially near health institutions where school and sanitarium help each other, for those rooted should have it. Wholehearted faith active in self-denial must match light and fits for immortal life; the genuine believer's faith is manifest in purity with obedience making Christianity practical in all circumstances, confessing Christ with holy influence and Christ abiding, not of status but living through love.
This faith comes from God working through Christ's love revealed; as self dies it purifies as part of sanctification requiring daily trust, and it turns neglect into consecrated activity showing burden for souls, making consistent Christians, calling to repentance where burden met indifference. It means learned dependence of converted people feeling need of wisdom; it must be exercised because it sanctifies, with unbelief making the Lord ashamed and sloth accomplishing nothing, preparing to mold minds without burdens, looking to Jesus as author and finisher for strength, sometimes through entanglements stirring faculties to bless. This faith awakens when sinners recognize sin and Christ's cost, filling with gratitude leading to humility and desire to stop transgressing; faith and love are essential, without faith it is impossible to please God, not mere profession but active through love pleasing Him, needed by ministers.
This is the faith needed to turn from earthly things and be ready for Christ's soon coming; living faith in union with God keeps from weariness in doing good and makes an active body following Christ who kept traveling to heal and teach, though wearied and exhausted making every sacrifice so light might shine, with promised power for victory. Genuine faith cleanses from selfishness perfecting in love and making tender toward others; Christ imparts it to those repenting and seeking pardon for cleansing and sanctification through obedience, training mind against doubt and pressing on ungoverned by circumstances. Through grace Scripture truth must transform heart and actions, and when faith works by love it accepts correction, while resistance shows the work undone; in Christ is everlasting strength holding profession without wavering under temptation, keeping will on God's side though contrary to sense, molded as clay till likeness comes.
True faith purifies from prejudice conforming to His image with understanding of brethren as branches of the True Vine; this faith gives experience more valuable than gold bringing the Spirit in obedient children, white and black alike saved by same grace for same heaven, looking with compassion not superiority, thinking God's thoughts with sanctified perceptions in kindness. Those surrendered reveal it by making the Word counselor and letting truth sway life; talking and acting in faith secured by prayer reveals it, for safety lies not in professing but living truth, requiring earnest practice, standing by grace against flood with courage. Genuine faith is seen in practical life with refining influence making neat and orderly; this faith shapes conduct in well-ordered life leading to subdue self and live in harmony, letting Christ mold traits, with godly speech, untainted thoughts, ready for angels.
Saving faith is personal living faith weaving Christ into life trusting Him today to overcome every defect; the verse describes justifying faith as practical running through deeds in self-denying service, working for justification and sanctification with eye single, never doing evil for good, more than nominal like devils' trembling, inactive religion valueless. Genuine faith requires loving truth and living it; faith is not merely belief but trust putting promises into practice producing the Spirit's fruits, more than general agreement, for assent without obedient life strips power. It emanates from God admitting no selfishness and cannot be possessed until self dies; it must be had every day through the Spirit, exercised and cultivated as daily power, lest superficial reception leave bitterness to return, but walking in light in companionship, for educators also.
Harboring unbelief and neglecting love is greatest danger leaving one in darkness; this faith holds no doubt God fulfills promises trusting before sight comes, walking not by sight, stepping into duty with expectation, cultivated step by step. It means walking by faith not sight stepping into duty and working with expectation; it is gained by thorough seeking, making the Word counselor, and walking beside Christ, learned by daily heart work bringing advancement, needed with Spirit and grace. Simplicity of true faith is learned through daily heart work by study; when the Word is received it produces working faith and cuts away evil tendencies, received into mind and soul unto consecration, cutting inherited traits before they corrupt influence from life-giving to death.
The faith fulfills righteousness in those walking after the Spirit producing obedience; it makes God's standard the standard requiring pure heart in contrast to loose religion despising law, submitting will, yielding heart, fixing affections, renewing image to delight in precepts, responding to drawing in vital contact like healing touch not crowd pressure, with love to God and man. Those determined to obey possess it with intellect to discern; it gives courage to live up to principles as expression of His character, producing fruit, requiring surrender, bringing sanctification and keeping commandments, making God strength against temptation. This faith leads to doing God's will shown by doing best while trusting; fear of lessening gain is no reason to hesitate, displeasing the Lord, purifying and practicing righteousness.
Where much self and little Christ is seen love is missing because self rules, and because the end is near this must change; this faith gives view of sacrifice softening and filling with thanksgiving and desire to witness, emptying self for Christ's room, not tame assent but burning loyalty breaking in gratitude. Beholding Christ's excellence awakens longing for His love; looking to Calvary creates working faith purifying from selfishness rather than lulling to sleep, stirring to activity in labor of love with warfare against habits, valuing His sufficiency and sympathy. This faith constantly unites to Christ ending criticism; difference between good and wicked comes not from disposition but divine power transforming through believing conforming to Christ's likeness, producing fruit and daily sanctification, distinguishing Christians in oneness, unity and obedience.
This faith supports growth toward perfection with Christ as example; gaining sanctification requires learning self-denial and benevolence, depending on merits and power to follow footsteps, purifying. This faith purifies to be like Christ barricading from assaults; it belongs to those transformed learning to love God with all powers through harmonious association, leading to repentance not surface response, producing fruit and obedience. Meekness and humility are means God uses to make pure and holy learned by sharing suffering and bearing His yoke; this faith is holy uplifting power softening nature and drawing into one harmonious whole, preserving love that separated from world, binding by sacred cords to blend at the cross, with truth rooted and shown in spirit.
Love for one another removes barriers allowing the Spirit to work; this faith is expressed in sympathetic service seeing needs as one would want for oneself, meeting them not leaving to hardship, leading to unity with God not discontent, purifying not mere profession. This faith shapes kind humble conduct, for passion and dictatorial spirit do not advance truth; a follower cannot remain sharp, hardhearted, coarse, or harsh in censure, but respectful and gentle, stirring to labor of love against habits, effective through love. This faith brings the heart under controlling power of truth working outward in patience and kindness melting prejudice; it keeps principle without compromise while showing transformation making peacemakers, kind and courteous with heaven's sunlight, cleansing unlike Christ away and filling with pure attributes, not dry theories but love working outward.
This faith receives life from Christ seen in fruits empowered by the Spirit; joined closely it takes hold of eternal realities lifting above prejudice into unselfish atmosphere, filling heart to love as Christ loved, triumphing over color line like the Samaritan when Spirit is poured. This faith means more than acknowledging truth or ceremonies, for true religion is pure character not forms; this faith is the only qualification required training Jews to see the object abolished in Christ's living Sacrifice fulfilling ceremony, effective through love not status, dispensing pomp. This faith marks children off from professors who do not do the word with benevolence and mercy; all have a kind of faith but only this quality counts revealed in daily doing of Christ's will, drawing daily from power to fill world with light, marking with justice and mercy, cleansing from self-serving and human exactions.
The life of God cannot be shown until this faith is seen, for faith alone is dead; this faith brings conversion and leads to making calling sure, purifying, not of status but working through love. This faith cleanses from moral impurity constituting Christian experience; when truth is fully accepted it drives out selfish purposes preparing for growth, active not mere profession, enabling sacrifice, healthful love equipping for soul-saving, heard because true, constituting character for every member. Those in God's service must be cleansed doing all to His glory practicing justice; this faith leads to unity with God with rest and peace depending on Christ's grace, increasing with communion, purifying from selfishness to bear judgment, expressed in sympathetic service.
Everything depends on possessing this faith, and perfect tested faith makes perfect; the work of faith lifts the head revealing beauty even in youthful self-denial lifting Christ's cross, bringing grace atmosphere as Spirit works, making savor of life for blessing, binding in sympathy, unlike cold unbelief, convincing by reality not fable, with triumphs God alone recognizes. That pure strong faith must lead business marking every transaction; when accepted as laborers together with God He joins them to Christ to bear much fruit, drawing nourishment to carry plans, walking humbly, seeking diligently, serving earnestly, trusting fully, lest unprofitable in darkness, but uplifted, changed, joyful and giving in service. This faith leads to serve those in darkness rather than pursue own interests; it brings all faculties into submission enabling bearing His cross, purifying from selfishness, seeking others to Christ, growing fit by obeying truth.
This faith is to be cherished by workers especially with greater responsibility; it fills the true worker as God's helping hand ennobling him so submission removes drudgery, active through love, purifying, cherishing Christ's love and depending for strength with abiding presence. Christian workers need this faith with self-sacrifice, and schools near health institutions are valuable where students learn healthful living to minister to suffering, able to give reason, active not mere profession, cleansing defilement and equipping for difficult soul-saving with healthful love. Falling into temptation results from lacking this faith, while it makes God one's strength; those keeping undefiled exemplify it, and it is holy enabling generosity and service, purifying to active service, keeping from fall with courage to live principles, not valuing status.
The verse requires close examination of the heart and adorning truth in daily practice and dealings, and trifling with conscience and leading others wrong is dangerous, calling for faith acting through love cleansing the soul. The faith of the verse works for the good of others and to holiness by conforming the will to God, with Christ's death providing renewal that restores God's image and perfects character by beholding Christ, purifying through love. That faith leaves no room for unbelief and stinginess, ends living for self to live wholly for God, giving heart, time, talents, and firstfruits with best energies, laying down selfish aims and seeking first God's kingdom, raising to nobility and liberality, purifying.
