Genesis 11:28

And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

Haran died during the lifetime of his father Terah, in Ur of the Chaldees, which was the land of his own birth. This took place in the generations after Noah, when the average length of human life was decreasing. Before his death Haran had already become a father himself.

In those early generations it was uncommon for the usual order of death to be reversed by a son dying before his father. That rarity is also taught by those who treat it as worthy of special record precisely because it reversed the expected order. Because such a death was so rare, it was considered notable enough to be specifically recorded.

It was treated as exceptional because it was said to be the first instance in about two thousand years of human history of a son dying before his father. The verse thus illustrates premature death.
