Genesis 11:31
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
The verse belongs to a passage recording the generations from Shem to Terah and the early lives of Abram and his family. God first called Abraham while he lived in Ur of the Chaldees, and in obedience he moved as far as Haran. His father's family went with him to Haran because, though idolatrous, they still joined in the worship of the true God.
Abraham stayed in Haran until Terah died, and only afterward did the divine voice bid him go forward toward Canaan. The genealogies around the verse show the patriarchal era when people lived far longer than later generations, with human life spans greatly decreased after the Flood. Haran's death before his father Terah was an exception, since at that time it was uncommon for a son to die before his father.
