Abram and Sarai Enter Egypt With Their Householdby Ironbark
12:14Genesis 12:14
And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.
The arrival in Egypt came during another trial, when severe famine in the land led Abram to move down into Egypt. When he arrived there, the Egyptians saw that his wife was very beautiful. God gave him favor with the Egyptians, so that he left Egypt with more than he had when he went in. By being in Egypt he served as a representative through whom God was revealed to its inhabitants.
The verse faithfully records his sin and human weakness instead of hiding the failings of a respected servant of God. Such honest records warn against sin by showing that even people entrusted with great responsibilities can yield to temptation. Their struggles and falls and their recovery through God's grace encourage later believers to renew the conflict and overcome.
