Genesis 12:17

And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram’s wife.

The verse belongs to another trial for Abraham when severe famine in the land caused him to move down into Egypt. The Lord acted on Sarai's behalf because she was Abram's wife, striking Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues. God gave Abraham favor with the Egyptians, so that when he left Egypt he had more than when he went in. In Egypt, as in the other places where Abraham lived, God was revealed through Abraham, whose integrity and unselfishness represented God's character.

The verse stands in the record of Abraham's failures, showing that even a man favored by God could yield to temptation and that the Bible faithfully records such sins and their consequences. Such accounts warn against disobedience by showing that God's justice punishes wrongdoing. They also encourage those who fall to rise again through God's grace.
